Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was a popular, very creative composer of his age. His oeuvre consists of nine operas, sixty-six symphonies, forty-two string quartets, eighteen string trios, eleven piano trios, five piano quintets, serenades and ecclesiastical works. He composed especially numerous chamber music works for flute in various arrangements (duets, trios, quartets, quintets etc.). Out of his twenty-four flute concertos the one hereby published is marked No. 18 in the catalogue of Hoffmesiter's works, published in 1800. (A copy of that catalogue has been preserved at the Belgian Royal Library, Brussels.) The contemporary handwritten orchestral part-material ofthe concerto is to be found at the King Stephen Museum at Szekesfehervar, it had got there in 1951 as part of the music collection of the family Verebi-Vegh. Das handschriftliche Orchestermaterial aus dieser zeit befindet sich imSzekesfehervar Konig Stephan Museum, wohin es im Jahre 1951 mit der Notensammlung der Familie Verebi-Vegh belangt ist.

Vict oria Yagling (1946-2011) was born in Russia and lived in Finland since 1990. Her long career as a cellist served as an excellent accompaniment to the composition she began at an early age. For 11 years she was a cello student of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and Dmitry Kabalevsky and Tikhon Khrennikov taught her composition. Yagling won the first prize in the Gaspar Cassado Cello Competition and the following year the second prize in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. Her solo engagements took her to countless countries. She has also taught at several international music courses and master classes and was often a jury member for international cello competitions. Yagling left a profilic oeuvre, and the three cello concertos are her main works. Her other orchestral works include Finnish Notebook, Lyrical Preludes and the Suite for Cello and String Orchestra. She has also composed solo works (e.g. the Suite for Cello Solo No. 1 chosen as an obligatory piece for the 7th Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982), chamber works, including two string quartets, and vocal music. Her expressive, romantically orientated style is Russian in spirit and has grown out of the soil provided by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Yagling was a skillful pianist, able to master works of such a level as Chopin's Etudes. The amount of her piano works surpasses five hours of music.

Ferdinand Küchler is regarded as one of the great violin teachers of the 20th century. Their publication had to wait until 1716, when Estienne Roger issued them in two volumes of six concertos each. However, unlike the original announcement, “La Stravaganza” is more than a collection of concertos for solo violin with string accompaniment: in five of the concertos the soloist is joined by a second solo violin or even by a solo violoncello (Concerto No. 7).The many reprints of “La Stravaganza” bear witness to its popularity and widespread dissemination well into the 1730s. Besides the surviving prints, there is a significant body of handwritten sources containing alternative versions for seven of the concertos. Some of these manuscripts stem from the music library of Johann Georg Pisendel.This edition of “La Stravaganza” is not only the first scholarly-critical edition, it is also the only complete edition available.
