Die Schöpfung. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. The oratorio 'The Creation' represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn's compositional output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio. At the turn of the 19th century, Haydn broke with the traditional dominance of the arias, giving the chorus a distinctly greater significance. This opened the way for a new kind of choral oratorio which became one of the standard features of developing bourgeois concert life. This choral score supplements the existing performance material (BA 4648). It is based on the G. Henle Complete edition of the 'Works of Joseph Haydn'./ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte SATB

Following sensationally acclaimed premiere performances in Vienna, The Creation was published in several languages and by various publishing houses, including Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. We now know that a continuo instrument was used for Haydn's oratorio as premiered in Vienna. The supplementary continuo part enables an historically accurate reproduction for the first time: the harpsichord (and, increasingly, the pianoforte) fulfilled the important continuo function in the orchestras of the time.In the late 18th century, Joseph Haydn composed a choral work - The Creation - which set the standard for the sacred oratorio genre that stood long after the Viennese classical era and far beyond the boundaries of the German linguistic sphere.

Joseph Haydn made two settings of the Ambrosian song of praise the Te Deum. The second of these is a work of Haydn's last period and was written around 1800 for the Empress Marie Therese. Its large orchestra gives this work, which makes no use of solo singers, a particular splendour of sound akin to that of the choruses in Haydn's Creation. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5199900.

The primary source on which the new Carus Urtext edition is based is the first edition of the score from 1800. Contrary to normal custom, Haydn published the score himself in order to avoid unauthorized publications and to present an optimally designed edition from an authentic hand. With this original document, which has been compared with additional relevant sources, Carus now offers a musical text based on the latest musicological findings. The critical report provides all of the important data concerning the edition in a compact form suitable for practical use [practical performance]. A detailed foreword offers insight into the genesis of the work, its construction and reception and illuminates compositional and theological and spiritual-historical aspects. In addition to the score, with singing texts in two languages (G. van Swieten's original German and English text), in the interest of legibility, vocal and choral scores will be offered in two separate editions (German or English). This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score available separately - see item CA.5199000.
