This is an updated edition of Francis Poulenc's 1957 work Sonata For Flute And Piano, edited by Carl Schmidt. Featuring the full score and separate Clarinet part, this exclusive edition also includes a download card, giving you instant online access to demonstration and accompaniment tracks.After having begun a Sonata for Flute as early as 1952, questions arose over whether Poulenc would be able to complete this work on top of his various other compositions at the time. The piece was, thankfully, finally finished after being commissioned by Harold Spivacke, the Chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress, for a festival in honour of Elizabeth Coolidge. The world premiere, at Poulenc's request, took place at the Strasbourg Music Festival, performed by renowned flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, while the American premiere took place in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress. This new edition includes an extensive introduction to the piece, a detailing of the different sources that were used, and the inherent difficulty of compiling such an edition as this, all in English, French and German. Programme Note City Solstice celebrates the 800th anniversary of the construction of variousbridges  on the site of the current London Bridge. The difficulty of erecting sturdy  constructions on this bend in the Thames where the currents are particularly  strong has led to a rich seam of stories aboutthe bridges passed on through  history myth and folklore.What are thought to be the original words of 'London  Bridge is falling down' carry much of the references to materials used in building the original bridges- wood  and stone gravel and stone and then later iron and steel. The lines my fair lady   dance over my lady lea (or lee ) and with a gay lady are thought to refer to Matilda of  Scotland (c.1080- 1118) consort of Henry I and who was responsible for  building the series of bridges that carried the London toColchester road across the River Lea.King (Saint) Olaf II of Norway figures prominently in the destruction of the bridge  after its occupation by the Danes around 1013. Coming to the assistance of Aethelred Olaf isthought to have pulled the bridge down into the Thames along  with its occupying Danes rather than fight on the bridge itself. Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by ”Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg” to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the 'Augsburger Religionsfrieden' (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. (Luke 1,79) Words and music bind people together to form fellowships which guide us into the way of peace. Singing or playing together combine bodies and souls, so that our rhythm and breathing becomes one - a sense of belonging to one another is created which instils the very nature of peace. So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, 'Let God´s melody resound in you.' The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, 'I am with you always, even to the end of the age.' (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. The fate of Bohuslav Martinu's String Trio no.1 which dates from the turn of 1923 and 1924 and was lost until 2005 is somewhat remarkable. The trio is the first work which Martinu created in Paris after becoming the private pupil of Albert Roussel and was probably performed twice in Paris during 1924. It had its Czech premiere in February 1925 and Martinu requested his friend S. Novak to make sure that they didn't lose the scores of the things they played because he did not have any sketches or copies.Precisely that which Martinu feared then occurred - the sole existing version of the trio was lost; it was not until the autumn of 2005 that the autographof the trio (the score and parts for the viola and cello - the violin part is still missing) was found at the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen thanks to the searches of the Bohuslav Martinu Institute and it is after this autograph that this edition has arisen.
