In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Uzee Brown Society of Choraliers— Uniquely capturing vastly diverse genres and styles of African American sacred music, TESTIMONY! includes foot-tapping jubilant, meditative and testimonial spirituals, charismatic sacred songs, and hymns beautifully spun out in anthem-like style, some with brilliant accompaniment and others unaccompanied. As the title would suggest, the songs collectively bear witness to victory in the face of life’s many challenges, not solely in the ten-year existence of the Choraliers or the African American experience, but as a microcosm of the human condition, with its unpredictable twists and turns in the exciting and ever-evolving cycle of life.

The Six Three-Part Preludes and Fugues are regarded as a unique testimony to Mozart's profound interest in the works of Bach.
ISBN 9790004338032. 9 x 12 inches.
The Six Three-Part Preludes and Fugues are regarded as a unique testimony to Mozart's profound interest in the works of Bach. Or was it a brilliant contemporary of his who arranged the two preludes and five fugues by Johann Sebastian, and one fugue by Wilhelm Friedemann for string trio and supplemented the collection with further preludes? The new editions put the music text of Johann Nepomuk David's edition of the parts to the test, especially the editor's practical arrangement, which reflected the performance style of his time. These new editions go one step further, also in a performance-practical sense. The publication of the score and (orchestral) parts also enables string orchestras to play this piece for the first time - an instrumental possibility that is perfectly legitimate, both musically and historically. It is a fascinating addition to the repertoire that one can recommend to every chamber orchestra.Contents:No. 4 Adagio Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Adagio e dolce from the Sonata for Organ III BWV 527 Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Contrapunctus 8 from the Art of Fugue BWV 1080No. 5 Largo Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Largo from the Sonata for Organ II BWV 526 Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Allegro from the Sonata for Organ II BWV 526No. 6 Adagio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Fuga in F minor Falk No. 31/8.

Michael Haydn composed his four Sonatas for Violin and Viola in 1783, commissioned by the Salzburg archbishop. In fact, the archbishop ordered six sonatas, but Haydn fell ill and was not able to write the last two sonatas himself. As helper in need, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart aided his friend. He composed the two missing sonatas and agreed that they would be presented to the archbishop under the name of Haydn. While both sonatas by Mozart have found a wide distribution, the four compositions by Haydn nearly fell into oblivion and are made available again with this edition.Testimony of the friendship between M. Haydn und W. A. Mozart.

The Advent cantata Machet die Tore weit has long been one of the most frequently performed of Telemann's sacred works. Among the copies of this cantata which have been handed down is a copy by J. S. Bach which bears testimony to the high respect he paid to his then more celebrated colleague from Hamburg: It is a copy of the score in the hand of the Thomaskantor which was made for a performance in Leipzig on Avent Sunday in 1734 (therefore during the same period as the first performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio). Of the four solo singers the soprano and bass, each of whom has an aria, are indispensable. The brief alto solos in the opening chorus can be sung by a member of the choir, and the tenor recitative can be sung by the soprano soloist. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3910500.

There are many composers about whom it is believed, today, that they composed conservatively, or against the taste of their time. The question is also raised, today, which extract of this large amount of effective and high-quality music, unknown for the most part, should receive our attention; which of it is worth rediscovering or re-editing. Camillo Schumann is one of the most important representatives of these composers, but his works are still largely unknown today. He was born on 10 March 1872 in Konigstein, Saxony. His musical language combines the sound world of Brahms with the grand, late-romantic Liszt School. He wrote piano parts of incredible power and virtuosity, approaching the sounds of Rachmaninoff. His wonderfully individual melodic language makes these works a valuable testimony to a composer who never had his due recognition. The cello sonatas Opp. 59 (EB 32082) and 99 (EB 32083) are the first of three works for this combination. Op. 59 was composed around 1905/06, Op. 99 followed in 1932. Nothing is known so far of the circumstances of the composition of this work, including for whom it was composed. However, it is quite evident that Schumann wrote it, like most of his works, primarily for his own concerts and befriended musicians. The extensive entries in the piano part bear witness to a considerably practical approach. Crossed-out bars, notes added or crossed out in chords as well as a number of revisions of other kinds are more the rule than the exception. The composer's own fingerings written in the piano part also underline this assumption. The present edition contains two solo-parts each. One clean Urtext-part free of any additions from the editor and a second one with bowing marks and fingerings by Maria Kliegel who recorded both sonatas for the first time with the label Naxos. Both sonatas show evident resemblance to the works of this combination by Johannes Brahms and are therefore a must have for ambitious cellists. With supplementary violoncello part marked by Maria Kliegel.

Peacefully flowing from a gentle pastorale by J.S. Bach, this graceful melody rises like a folk song. Presented as a testimony of commitment, the text nourishes the heart to trust and follow the path of righteousness. The chorus is full and expressive, sharing the desire to walk worthy until our faith becomes sight. Music of the heart!

This remarkable collection of 10 Passagagli, the only known composition by the Neapolitan string teacher Gaetano Francone (fl. 1688–1717), is a unique example of a virtuoso school for the cello, as well as an extraordinary source of knowledge on improvisation for scholars and for performers, on both baroque and modern instruments. Although the term ‘violoncello†appears in the work’s title, the music indicates that the composer was writing for a non-standard instrument, one tuned a tone lower than the modern cello. To perform these works with the original left-hand position, today’s players should either adopt the Bb1–F–c⠓g tuning or transpose each work one tone higher. Francone’s method stands as precious testimony to the advanced technical level of cello playing in 17th-century Naples.

The first known canon of European art music, now in the British Museum in London, is preserved in a thirteenth-century manusript from the English abbey in Reading: This is the so-called summer canon, whose verses greet the advent of summer. An accompanying note elucidates the artistic layer-like construction of the sound structure: a two-voice foundation of bell-like, swinging pendulum tones supports an upper structure of four voices which enter at equal time intervals. The note terms the canon rota * round -, which makes reference to the turning, circling movement of the constantly pulsating sound. The circular figure originates in a vital, ages-old moving force in music-making, and it demands a dance-like execution. But the canon is also, through the interaction of the strictly ordered voice entries, convivially bound musical form. Carl Orff was able to choose no better fitting musical form for the Greetings to Youth at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich than the medieval rota. In the connexion of the singing voices with the Orff instruments, today in world-wide use, a testimony of European tradition sounds in a living present.

Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. The range of compositional colors stretches from Alpine-influenced writing for male voice choir (Hostias), to a five-part choral movement (Sanctus) and an unaccompanied movement (Requiem), to movements with choir and soloists. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2732000.

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Yet these masterworks can stand comparison to the best works of Michel-Richard de Lalande. They are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2100700.
