Student's Concerto, No. 5 in D Major, Op. 22

In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The Concerto in F major BWV 1052 is the sixth of the harpsichord concertos contained in the autograph score that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. ms. Bach P 234). The initials at the end of the piece SDGl ('Soli Deo Gloria') form a pendant to the J.J. ('Jesus Juva') found at theopening of the D-minor Concerto BWV 1052. This indicates that BVW 1057 formed the final piece in this six-work opus the only authentic and self-contained collection of concertos we have from Bach apart from his presentation copy of the Brandenburg Concertos (1721). The viola is often not credited with being able to take over a soloistic role - but this is completely unjust. In 1738 Johann Philipp Eisel already wrote of the viola as being the 'very bowels of music? and stressed that it was not only needed to 'flesh out? the orchestral sound but also as a 'concert voice, which is fully proven by the concertos and concert overtures by the famous Capell-Meister Telemann?. Telemann's Concerto in G major is considered to be one of the earliest works for solo viola and orchestra and forms part of the core repertoire for pupils and students. Three Études. For solo piano. The first of these Études was written in memory of Mark Ray, former Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), who died in tragic circumstances in 2006. It makes use of syncopated rhythms and percussive articulation, with a passing reference to Ravel?s G major concerto, the work he performed in concert when he was a student at the RNCM. The Étude was premiered by Peter Lawson in 2006. Études 2 and 3 were added to complete the set in 2020. Étude 2 is dedicated to Murray McLachlan, and is a study in textural control, with ?a quiet wistfulness, floating with reflection calmly over gentle quaver figurations?. Étude 3 is dedicated to Jonathan Scott, and has more than a hint of the motoric rhythms and folk melodies of Bartok. It is ?an extremely energised essay that encourages virtuosic bravura and élan? (McLachlan).

Oskar Rieding (1840 1918) is known to all young violinists for his easy-to-play concertos for violin and piano of which Opp.34 to 36 remain entirely in first position. In Op.36 catchy melodies are coupled with first technical difficulties such as eighth-note arpeggios 16th-note runs and chromaticism. These appear in small measures throughout the entire work. The principal source for our edition is the autograph score of Bach’s harpsichord concertos preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek (Mus. ms. Bach P 234) where BWV 1054 forms the third item. Toaccommodate the upper limit of the harpsichord keyboard Bach decided to transpose the piece down a whole tone which allowed him to retain the frequently occurring peak pitch e3 without altering the melodic line.The D-major Concerto owes its popularity to the clear and straightforward formal design of its movements no less than its overall mood of relaxed merriment. Just as Serge Rachmaninoff's piano virtuosity ranked him among the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, his compositions for piano and orchestra won him an important position among modern composers. Rachmaninoff wrote the stirring Piano Concerto No. 1 in the years 1890–91, while he was still a young student at the Moscow Conservatory, and revised it nearly three decades later in 1917, when he began to devote his life mainly to his international career as a piano virtuoso. The immense and enduring success of the Piano Concerto No. 2, completed in 1901, has made this romantic work one of the most performed and recorded in the concerto literature and one of the most familiar compositions in all of music. The powerful and expressive Piano Concerto No. 3 was composed for a concert tour of America, during which Rachmaninoff appeared with great success as composer, pianist, and conductor. Like the first two concertos, it remains a repertoire favorite in concert halls around the world.

Considered one of Bach's finest students many compositions of Krebs have been erroneously attributed to Bach. Krebs composed two concertos for lute and orchestra including this Concerto in F Major in three movements: Allegro Larghetto and Allegro assai. In this edition Victor Van Puijenbroeck has created a piano reduction of the orchestral score and also has adapted the lute part to be played on guitar. Included are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) and guitar(capotasto). Additionally the solo parts feature two versions/interpretations. The concerti by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart K 313 in G Major and K 314 in D Major represent two of the most important pieces for the flute.
