Mend elssohn's well-known Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without words) have been arranged by Bernd Stegmann for mixed choir and organ. In the process he has set sacred texts to music. The melodies, often vocal in character, and the distinctive accompanying figures are sometimes simple, in one-part adopted from the model; at other times they are in a four to six-part choral setting, sometimes as a dialog of different groups or treated as polyphonic play using the building blocks of the original. Rich color and striking music is combined with profound texts which invite reflection as well as listening. Score available separately - see item CA.9705000.

This collection of more than 170 songs and chants without words, including six previously unavailable in North America composed by Edwin E. Gordon, is for anyone looking for more songs organized by tonality and meter to use in their Music Learning Theory-based classes. Like the first volume, these songs and chants are an excellent resource for bringing young children through the various stages of preparatory audiation, from acculturation to imitation and assimilation. The melodies in this collection are organized by tonality: major, minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian, multitonal/multimodal, chants are organized by meter: duple meter, triple meter, unusual paired meter, unusual unpaired meter, and multi-metric. As with the first volume, these songs and chants present a rich and varied musical syntax, and they are also a great way to hold a child’s attention. Intentionally without lyrics (so children concentrate on the music and are not distracted by the words), these songs should be sung by an adult using a conversational and relational approach rather than as a formal musical performance. If left free to move around the classroom and to enact movements while listening to these songs, young children will spontaneously babble and vocalize—the earliest forms of autonomous “creation” in response to the music. This collection presents six legendary blues guitarists from the 1920s to early 1940s. Each has his own unique approach, style and techniques for playing. Some like Rev. Gary Davis favored regular tuning while Josh White was equally at home playing in Open D tuning as well as standard tuning. Lonnie Johnson is unique in his playing techniques as well as use of a D G D G B E tuning. Buddy Moss??s recordings influenced generations of Piedmont guitarists, especially Blind Boy Fuller. Bo Carter had one of the most unusual tonal approaches for playing blues, ragtime and novelty songs. And lastly there is Tommy McClennan. His recordings sound ??rough and tumble? but once you explore the intricacies of his playing you will discover a powerful blues guitarist.

In the last year of his life, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed the six charming Children's Pieces, op. 72 (EB 8317). In contrast to the collections of children's pieces (by Schumann or Reger, for example), these have remained relatively unknown. Admittedly, however, they here and there demand technical and musical accomplishments that are beyond those to be expexted of beginners and belong to an intermediate stage of instruction. In the present edition, minor re-arrangements and cuts (in op. 72 no. 6) are intended to make the music more accessible to a child's understanding. The Songs without Words presented here are musically more demanding. From the total of 48 pieces, I have selected three slow compositions in which simple, beautiful melodie lines are supported by chorale-like piano textures. True performance of these pieces requires clean polyphonic chord playing and a cultivated pedal technique. The selection of pieces in this edition will, it is hoped, stimulate renewed interest in the piano music of Mendelssohn, which is so neglected today. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1979A Selection from 6 Children's Pieces (Op. 72) and Songs without Words.
