Rio Nido is based on the bossa nova groove, which originated in Brazil. The feel is relaxed throughout, and played in a very unhurried manner. The song has an AABA form, with the melody being passed between the brass and woodwind sections every eight bars before a short interlude into the solo section. Following the solos, a brief shout chorus is heard before the song recaps at the bridge. The piece concludes with a tag of the last four bars of the song, ending on a unison pitch.

The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazil Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned 24th Capriccio, transforming it into variationson jazz requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the 24th Capriccio. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various developmental passages and transitional improvisations while interpreting this work in concert. Furthermore, when the work is considered as a short encore piece, it is abbreviated in a manner deemed suitable by Say.

Inspi red by her friends’ beatboxing and exploration of jazz, flutist Chris Potter joins the fun and brings us along in this introduction to swing rhythm and the basics of beatboxing. Playing off the multiple meanings of “mode” and “à la mode”, Dr. Potter fashionably explores a world of varied scales and modern percussive sonorities where the ch- ch- ch- beatboxing attack leads players to chant about ch-ch-chocolate!.A Few Words from ChrisThis title came to me out of nowhere at 4 AM one morning, and I just had to write a piece to go along with it! I love words with multiple meanings, and “mode” has three! The French term à la mode means in a current, fashionable style: in other words, popular. The alto flute certainly fits that description! For Americans, the phrase is used when describing the dessert pie à la mode, meaning pie with ice cream, typically vanilla. Pie à la mode has an interesting history! The phrase and the American dessert is attributed to John Gieriet. He was born in Switzerland, later moved to France, and must have studied cooking because two years after moving to the U.S. in 1854, Gieriet was put in charge of all the food service at the White House. He served under two presidents, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. When that job ended, he moved to Duluth, Minnesota and bought a hotel. In 1885, a menu for the hotel offered a dessert called pie à la mode, the first time this phrase had appeared in print. Originally it was blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. In music, the term mode means a series of notes that have an identifiable pattern of intervals encompassing an octave. Major and minor scales are modes, as are other scale forms such as pentatonic, dorian, phrygian, and lydian. ALTO À LA MODE uses three modes, all based on D. In this piece, you will find the D blues scale (D F G Ab A C D), the D dorian (D E F G A B C D), and the D minor natural form (D E F G A Bb C D).In addition to the three melodic modes, I wanted a rhythmic idea or two to unify the piece. I decided touse the rhythms of the word vanilla: three short notes with emphasis on the second note, and chocolate: two short notes with emphasis on the first note. Also please notice that the spoken syllable cha is the beginning sound of chocolate! All this and no calories!I credit my fabulous friend Ali Ryerson for the jazz influence, and the wonderful composer Nicole Chamberlain for the beatboxing inspiration.

Introduce your band and audiences to a little 2-beat and some jazz history with this easy to prepare arrangement of this great jazz standard. Originally a ragtime piano piece, That's-A-Plenty is most commonly associated with Dixieland music. This arrangement now makes it available to jazz bands at the medium-easy level. There's lots of fun for all the sections, including some smeared notes for the bones and some short solis for the saxes. The drummer gets some tom-tom work a la Gene Krupa, and while there are no improvised solos, one (or all) of the trumpets gets to do a written out call and response solo back and forth with the rest of the band. This one is a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

Up to now, the Dutch composer and performer Karel van Steenhoven, founder member of the renowned Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet, has mainly written demanding concert literature for the recorder. Now he has added an easy work for beginners to the recorder repertoire: 'A Musical Journey' was composed for two young recorder pupils and leads through different stylistic eras of European music history. Van Steenhoven was inspired by an old tune from Ancient Greek which moves from classical antiquity via the Middle Ages and Baroque era to jazz, swing and modern music in 14 short character pieces. In a playful and humorous way, children are thus introduced to the different styles of music. An excursion of educational value without missing out on fun and pleasure.

Infant Eyes is one of the most beautiful and unique ballads in the history of jazz. Bob Mintzer's simple setting of the Wayne Shorter chart lets the melody speak for itself and provides a perfect showcase for your tenor soloist. Originally written for five saxophones (AATTBar) and piano, this arrangement works equally well using the optional parts for a trumpet/flugelhorn and trombone.

By Robert Denham.Patchworks is comprised of eight short character sketches, each one unique in its manner and flavor. Styles include tango, jazz, blues, cakewalk, and waltz, although all of these are portrayed in a 20th century setting. The variety described above is reflected in the work's title, which refers to a mix and match method of composition, almost like the sewn-together rags of a patchwork quilt. Each rag has a separate history and a separate context. The piece may be played as a set, or individual movements may be extracted at the performer's discretion. We hold these truths has been a particular favorite as an encore piece.
