The story of faith is often reflected as a journey from darkness to light. The Old Testament speaks of Israel living in bondage and darkness, awaiting the light of the promised Messiah, and His coming is punctuated by light every step of the way: a bright angelic host proclaiming the news to Judean shepherds keeping watch over their flocks; a shining star inviting Magi from afar to the young Christ-child in an act of worship and praise. The book of John refers to Jesus as the light of all people (Jn 1:4). Jesus even referred to Himself as the light of the world (Jn 8:12). It is this imagery of light that provides the unifying thread for Behold the Star! This extended work for choir, narrators, and congregation is a blend of original and familiar carols. It may be performed in a single worship experience or in smaller segments over the weeks leading to Christmas. Behold the Star! is an inspirational reminder that Jesus, the light of the world, has indeed come!

ISBN 9790007167691. Text language: Danish/German/English. Text: Grundtvig, Nicolai Frederick Severin.
Ayres set two verses from a children's poem by the Danish lyric poet and theologian N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). It tells of the shining star of Christmas. In double-choir structure, alternating between female and male-voice choir, Ayres depicts the shining of the star leading in a great intensification to a magnificent radiating effect. The mainly homophonic work remains in a tonal A major throughout, but contains surprises with some abrupt individual modulations which require secure intonation. It is suitable for both Advent concerts and for Christmas or Epiphany services. For ease of performance the whole piece contains a singable German and English translation.

Abendstern, composed by Lauren Bernofsky,?evokes an image of a sunset over the tree-covered hills of the Bavarian countryside with the Abendstern, or evening star, shining brightly over the scene. A hauntingly beautiful theme in falling thirds?evokes the treetops as they become darker and murkier. This piece is a wonderful addition to any concert program and can be used as a touching?tribute at a memorial service. One summer night during a visit to Bavaria in southern Germany, I stood outside on a balcony overlooking the hills of the Bavarian forest, watching the beautiful early-evening sky. It was still light out, but I could make out one solitary star in the sky. As the sun slowly went down, the landscape became more and more dark and indistinct, and the star shone brighter and brighter. My mother-in-law stood there with me. I asked her the name of the star, and she answered, Abendstern (or Evening Star.) I was so moved by what I saw, I went inside and took out my manuscript paper and started to write down this piece. The tree-covered hills and tranquility of the evening are evoked by the theme, whose contour (with little bumps) mirrors the contour of the treetops on the hills. The star is represented by the sustained note E; at the beginning of the piece, it can be heard in a low register in the violas, and over the course of the piece, it is heard in higher and higher octaves, as the star shines ever more brightly. By the end, the landscape has disappeared into the darkness, and now all we see is the star, shining its brightest, and played by the upper strings, now harmonized to convey its brilliant light..One summer night during a visit to Bavaria in southern Germany, I stood outside on a balcony overlooking the hills of the Bavarian forest, watching the beautiful early-evening sky.
