Rachmaninoff s music for the All-Night Vigil service long known inaccurately as his Vespers is a masterpiece in its own right. It draws on centuries-old Orthodox chant and the performance tradition of Russian folk music and embodies the ideal of Russian church music championed by a group of Moscow musicians of the time. In this All-Night Vigil the great composer-pianist-conductor has allied his own imagination skill and experience with the expertise built up at the Synodal School of Church Music not least by its choir which gave the first performances at several Moscowconcerts.  This edition has been carefully prepared to present Rachmaninoff s music in a clear and easily readable format and also offers a new transliteration of the Church Slavonic text. For the first time an audio pronunciation guide is provided online which will prove indispensable for choirs wishing to perform this most beautiful of masterpieces.  In the November/December issue of Choir and Organ Jeremy Summerly writes that this edition of All-Night Vigil is 'a timely publication and it is difficult to imagine it presented better.' He says that the 'introductory material is immaculate and places this culturally complex work in its colourful historical context ' making this a 'legible user-friendly and authoritative edition...a model of its type.'  Editor Stuart Campbell has contributed articles on Russian music to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (second edition) and Die neue MGG. Cambridge University Press published two volumes of his anthology of criticism entitled Russians on Russian Music. He is a tutor for the adult-education units of the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and joint musical director (with Svetlana Zvereva) of the chamber choir Russkaya Cappella.

All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a setting of music for a night-long service on the eves of Russian Orthodox holy days, and became one of Rachmaninoff's favorite compositions. Basing the 15 movements of his choral setting on a combination of traditional Russian Orthodox chants, Latin hymns, and original chants by the composer, the work was completed in less than two weeks in 1915. This arrangement utilizes the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 10th, and 12th movements, along with the traditional Amens at the beginning of Movements 1 and 2. Unlike other settings of choral works for wind ensemble, this arrangement is constructed as a complete suite that is intended to allow the performers and audience to experience the power and beauty of the complete Vespers. Dur: c. 16:00 (Recorded by the Florida State University Wind Orchestra - Rick Clary, conductor).

The All-Night Vigil (Vespers) Op. 37 is an a cappella choral work first performed in 1915. It's fifteen movements consist of Russian Orthodox Church texts. Rachmaninoff had stopped attending church, but he felt compelled to write some of his own chants in the style of the Church, calling them conscious counterfeits. The work is enormous, of over one hour of the most beautiful choral writing with Rachmaninoff's patented rich harmonies, melody and polyphony. Paul Erion has arranged this work for moderately advanced 10-part Brass Ensemble of: 4 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones & Tuba.

This moving piece embodies all the simplicity of Russian Orthodox music, yet displays the sweeping beauty of Rachmaninov's lyricism. Conductors will appreciate the opportunity to teach extended phrases and legato style. Vespers is the sunset evening prayer of the Orthodox Church, and during the canonical hours of an all-night vigil, the Ave Maria would be sung at midnight, hence the 12 chime notes at the apex of the piece. For a special effect, the mallet parts can be doubled off-stage to simulate church bells. (2:40).
