French composer, Paul Dukas (1865-1935) is best known for his orchestral piece, The Sorcerer's Apprentice. However, his catalogue represents many other significant works by the composer, including Alla Gitana for alto saxophone and piano. Composed in 1909, Alla Gitana was originally a selection of vocal studies. However, Marcel Mule's transcription for alto saxophone has made this delightful work more accessible. Dukas reflects the French romantic style in Alla Gitana through uses of flourishing semiquavers, lyrical melodies and chromaticism. For all aspiring, advanced saxophonists, Dukas' Alla Gitana is an exquisite addition to the repertoire.

Barenreiter 's publication of a new volume of theWorks of Gioachino Rossini, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the operaIl barbiere di Sivigliawhich meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted. A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume. A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini's ,,Barber of Sevillewith the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009. Through 1829 Rossini was an extraordinarily prolific composer of operas, comic, serious, and semiserious, in Italian and French, as well as of a great deal of vocal and instrumental music. He composed sacred music, vocal treatises, cantatas. Then, for many different reasons, he wrote very little music for more than twentyfive years, if we except some songs and the ' Stabat Mater' . Only after he left Italy definitively for Paris in 1855 did he find his voice again. Between 1857 and 1868 a fresh group of masterpieces issued from his pen, the so-called ' Peches de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age), including chamber music, songs, and the 'Petite Messe Solennelle'. Philip Gossett, General Editor of Works of Gioachino Rossini, is the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago and a professordi chiara famaat the University of RomeLa Sapienza. He is also general editor of The Works of Giuseppe Verdi. Barenreiter in cooperation with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at The University of Chicago will publish ten volumes in the series Works of Gioachino Rossini, in critical editions, during the period 2007-2011. These are all volumes that were not issued in theEdizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini.

Jacqu es Offenbach's more than 100 stage works are an endless treasure trove of vocal highlights with highly different musical moods and lyrical themes. To mark the 200th birthday of the great composer in 2019, which is at the same time the year of the 20th anniversary of the Offenbach Edition Keck OEK, the editor and Offenbach expert Jean-Christophe Keck has assembled a selection of arias. The four-part collection arranged according to voice category shows a rather unknown, romantic side of Offenbach. Apart from rediscovered works and first editions, however, the collection is not complete without some of his unrivalled hits. Apart from trouvailles from Les Bavards, Maitre Peronilla and Robinson Crusoe, the volume for mezzo-soprano also contains some of those crowd-pullers the composer wrote for his most famous star, the singer Hortense Schneider. But Perichole, the Beautiful Helen or the Grand Duchess of Gerolstein show definitely not only their burlesque side, but also their thoughtful one here. And in Fantasio's bitter-sweet Ballad to the Moon, Offenbach paints his own portrait as a melancholic in a jester's costume. Romantic Offenbach is aimed at fully trained and budding professionals as well as at Offenbach fans of every shade and colour, providing repertoire pieces for recitals, studies or private music-making.

Apart from rediscovered works and first editions, however, the collection is not complete without some of his unrivalled hits. This volume shows that the composer especially liked to entrust the tenors with tender, sentimental numbers. But the melancholy is not always as genuine as that of the involuntary jester from the opera comique of the same name (here represented by the well-known Ballad to the Moon): Characters like Pluto, Paris or Robinson Crusoe know how to use their melodious voices with quite some ulteriormotive to achieve their goal. The character Frantz, traumatized by war, from the grand opera Les Fees du Rhin, however, is one of Offenbach's few deeply tragic figures. Romantic Offenbach is aimed at fully trained and budding professionals as well as at Offenbach fans of every shade and colour, providing repertoire pieces for recitals, studies or private music-making.

The volume for baritone/bass proves that Offenbach also wrote varied rewarding repertoire pieces for deep male voice: drinking song, prayer and arioso show the facets of the mercenary soldier Conrad from the grand opera Les Fees du Rhin, whereas the Prince from Fantasio, the pedlar from Le 66 or the Great Mogul from Barkouf are perfectly fun-loving characters. Apotheker und Peruckenmacher, too, was one of Offenbach's great comedy successes. Of a more lyrical character is the husband of Madame Favart, an opera comique from the late years of the composer's life. Romantic Offenbach is aimed at fully trained and budding professionals as well as at Offenbach fans of every shade and colour, providing repertoire pieces for recitals, studies or private music-making.

Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) is one of the many composers who laid the groundwork for their careers as pupils at the St. Thomas school in Leipzig. After subsequently studying law in Leipzig he was initially employed as a harpsichordist at the Hamburg Opera, which was followed by his appointment to the position of Kapellmeister at the court of Darmstadt. He was selected for the position of Thomaskantor in 1723, but his patron in Darmstadt refused to release him. Graupner's more than 1,400 cantatas occupy a central position in the history of the Protestant church cantata. Here, for the first time, in this six-volume thematic catalog his entire opus is presented and elucidated by means of detailed incipits for each movement of each work, including all of the relevant information, such as scoring, history of the sources, dating and origin of the text. This Graupner catalog is an indispensable reference work for understanding the music of the Bach era. Score available separately - see item CA.2402900.

Writ ten by noted scholar and conductor Dennis Shrock, Choral Diversity is a presentation of composers throughout history who represent the broad and diverse canon of choral music. Included are twenty women composers and ten composers of color, many of whom have been previously underrepresented in studies and in performances. Each chapter presents overviews of the composer’s life and choral output, information and analysis of selected compositions, including complete texts and literal translations not found elsewhere, and guidelines that address related and important aspects of performance. Importantly, Shrock approaches choral diversity from multiple perspectives. Most notably, the book highlights the music of women composers—such as Hildegard von Bingen, Amy Beach, and Undine Smith Moore—as well as composers of color, including José MaurÃcio Nunes Garcia, William Grant Still, and Margaret Allison Bonds, among others. Rounding out his approach, Shrock also explores the lesser-known works of familiar composers such as Palestrina and Brahms. The book’s repertoire, too, represents a diversity of musical periods, styles, and genres—including chants, madrigals, chansons, motets, partsongs, oratorios, cantatas, and vocal chamber pieces—all of which are intended to be accessible to regular school, church, and community choruses. With its broad scope and scholarly authority, Choral Diversity is the ideal resource for conductors at all levels looking to diversify their concert programming in a practical and historically informed way. Dennis Shrock is author of ten books, three published by Oxford University Press and the remaining seven published by GIA Publications. He has held faculty positions at Boston University, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Oklahoma. He has also served as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and was a lecturer and member of the conducting staff at Yale University. Shrock received his master’s and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Dr. Will Kesling is Professor of Choral and Orchestral Conducting at the University of Florida, where he has taught for two decades. He has conducted hundreds of choral ensembles and nearly fifty of the world’s finest symphony orchestras. His ensembles have received international attention for their excellence and musical expression.  Thank you, Dr. Kesling, for the decade you gave of yourself to write the most complete and comprehensive writing on the topics of choral techniques, methods, and conducting I have seen. It is in-depth yet practical, to the point of being a valuable resource for both the young conductors entering the choral field to the well-established professionals. You have given us a solid foundation in all significant areas of the choral art, including, among many others, the production of beautiful vocal tone, detailed physical vocal production, textual and physical components of English diction, repertoire programming, appropriate style, interpretation and phrasing, and a pathway to successful conducting of combined choral and orchestral forces. Your enormous and highly successful career, with worldwide performances and numerous awards and honors, has enabled you to bring validity and integrity to the entire writing. —Donald Neuen   Distinguished Professor Emeritus, UCLA   Former member of the Robert Shaw Chorale   Mr. Shaw’s Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Choruses For more than 50 years, Dr. Will Kesling has been and continues to be a prominent figure and voice in the International and American choral profession. His new book, The Voices I Hear, is the distillation of his long and distinguished career as a conductor and choral music educator. The driving and consuming passion throughout Kesling’s life is the preparation and performance of the world’s rich and diverse choral and orchestral repertoire and the education, development, and growth of those who perform and conduct it. It overflows with insights into the choral art that will not only instruct the beginning conductor but also will enlighten and entertain the seasoned professional conductor and educator. Dr. Kesling has brought to the choral profession significant new insights to all lovers of the choral art. —Craig Jessop   Professor of Music, University of Utah   Former Music Director of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square   and the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants Will Kesling’s book, The Voices I Hear, is practical and philosophical, useful and inspirational, focused and comprehensive. The observations and advice are based on his vast personal experiences on the podium with choirs and orchestras, and the book is a monumental resource for both the young conductor and the veteran. Containing a broad spectrum of musical styles, composers, and topics, Kesling’s direct and practical writing connects immediately with today’s choral musician. It is comprehensive in scope, practical and helpful in its suggestions, and, perhaps most surprising in a book from an academic, superbly written in clear and powerful English. Kesling speaks with conviction, clarity, and polish, and he finds colorful and memorable ways of making his points and presents the material from the perspective of one who has done all these things for decades at a highly professional level. I give this volume the highest possible recommendation. —Daniel Gawthrop   Composer & Conductor.

This collection is a selection of excerpts from Bach cantatas, chosen not only for the beauty of their musical content but because from the pedagogical point of view too they deserve a place in a publication intended for educational purposes. The excerpts embrace two distinct areas of Baroque vocal music, the melodic realms of the aria and the recitative. The aria and arioso quotations in the collection, generally presented without accompaniment, are intended for sight-singing. The aria and recitative excerpts with continuo accompaniment also provide students with serious harmonization tasks and are therefore principally related to their music theory studies. Volume Icontains the easier cantata excerpts, Volume II the more difficult ones.

During his studies, pianist and composer Florian Nagel drew on the teachings of two masters with diametrically opposed approaches tomusic: according to him, Marcel Bitsch brought him wisdom and Claude Ballif, folly. He has written numerous pieces for the pianoalong with vocal and chamber music. His first international success came with Alice in Wonderland for piano four hands and narrator,an orchestral version of which was premiered in March 2018 by the Orchestra national du Capitole de Toulouse. Nagel's Piano Book connects old and new, drawing on the past while remaining firmly anchored in modern times. The 25 remarkably inventive pieces in this collection present an astonishing diversity of styles. From the Prelude et Fuga Antica to the study for the Octaves and the Hommage Ligeti et Rautavaara, this volume offers a rich selection of the piano's potential today. Written equally for concert performance and for the perfection of technique, it also contains an educational component in which the musical form is placed at the service of a wide-ranging imagination.
