Cherubini made his Paris debut with Démophon, which premiered in 1788. Tohru Takahashi has arranged this dramatic overture for concert band, with specific parts for oboe, bassoon and saxophone among others. However, since the important parts are also included as cues in the score, it can be adapted to a more limited instrumentation. In het jaar 1788 debuteerde de Italiaanse componist Luigi Cherubini in Parijs met zijn opera Demophon. Van de dramatische ouverture schreef Tohru Takahashi een arrangement voor blaasorkest. Bijzondere partijen zijn weggelegd voor hobo, fagot en saxofoon. Omdat de belangrijkste stemmen als cues in de partituur zijn opgenomen, kunt u het werk ook met een kleinere bezetting uitvoeren. Die Oper Démophon war Cherubinis erstes Werk in Paris und wurde 1788 uraufgeführt. Tohru Takahashi arrangierte die dramatische Ouvertüre aus der Oper für Blasorchester. March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.March of the Robot Army werd geschreven in opdracht van Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi voor Campobanda 2019: de financiering werd mogelijk gemaakt door JUST ITALIA. Nach und nachkommen weitere Instrumente hinzu, bis der Höhepunkt erreicht ist. Un autre changement de tonalité introduit une mélodie legato « en trio » sur un accompagnement quelque peu robotique : divers instruments s’y ajoutent progressivement pour aboutir unclimax. Des petits motifs tirés de l’introduction mènent une récapitulation complète qui reprend les deux premiers thèmes sous des formes différentes, avant de conclure la marche avec un bouquet final.

The character singing 900 Miles is looking forward to being reunited with his family after being separated from them for considerable time. The Wayfaring Stranger is a prominent American folk and gospel song that reflects upon the journey through life. The character in that song contemplates better times with their family in the afterlife. Both of these songs speak to the idea of searching for something beyond the current situation in which that person finds themselves. The programmatic qualities of the work are essentially tied to the main folk songa900 Milesaand they evoke the idea of where the song found its origins. Beyond that, both songs connect each of us to the sense of belonging and family that are the human experience. While the music paints a picture of someone who is alone, that is not a feeling I want for any young student in our schools today. Band is one of the few places where students can discover that sense of belonging and find a surrogate family. While band is a family that might not always get along, they can reach a shared goal through diligent work, caring and encouragement. It was a pleasure completing Lonely Travelers for longtime friend, superb musician, excellent educator and dedicated leader in music education Dennis Emert. His students debuted the work at the 2020 PMEA State Conference. I am deeply appreciative of Dennis and the friendship, encouragement and perspective he shared with me over the years teaching in the same region. The opening flute, clarinet and alto saxophone part can be performed by the entire section or as a solo at the discretion of the director. The washboard and spoon part can be doubled as players allow. I would suggest bringing these students to the front of the stage to get the sound of both instruments to the audience. As the piece develops and Wayfaring Stranger is layered with 900 Miles, please remind your ensemble to play so they can hear each other, not so they are individually heard. At the beginning of each part, a pedagogical content gives work trails to explore so as advice on how to use at best this book. Music teachers will also find in this volume a good basic repertory to introduce improvised music styles such a Jazz and Blues to their students. The first track on the Audio CD is for tuning, then each title is developed as follows: The basic theme is played by the tenor saxophonist, accompanied by the keyboard/bass/drum trio, to show the method to the musician The original theme is no more interpreted by the saxophonist and place is left entirely at the performer's disposal who, accompanied by the rhythm section, will give free reins to his creativity (theme exposition followed by an improvisation on the harmonic structure).

This stunning music was written by Dallas based Rosana Eckert for her debut album in 2003. It is a light and sophisticated bossa with some gorgeous harmony. Arranged by the incomparable Michele Weir for vocal jazz ensemble, this version was adapted for instrumental ensemble by Blair Bielawski. There is an eight-measure solo line that may be played by Tenor Saxophone and/or Guitar. Though not technically demanding, this chart does require some thoughtful playing by the winds and rhythm section.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.
