Cyril Scott (1879 - 1970) composed Deux Preludes in 1912. Includes: I. Poeme erotique and II. Danse. In the first of two Preludes, Poeme Erotique, the continually changing time signatures are the defining factor, displacing the bar accents between a rocking three and a rhapsodic five-quaver meter. The Danse that follows relies even more on the rhythmic acuity of its interpreters through an unfolding sucession of unusual meter changes. These two pieces will appeal to an advanced player wishing to enrich his repertoire with superb effective performance pieces. Schott's exemplary printing on buff-colored paper with slightly-larger-than-usua l notation should serve to bring the unjustly neglected Scott back into the violin-repertoire fold.--Strings magazine.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge, James Matheson's SPIN is a three-movement study in various meanings of the word spin. I. Gyre has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena. II. Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords in which snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. Similar to the first movement, III. Spiral explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales.SPIN was composed in early 1998. Each of the work’s three movements assumes the task of exploring a different meaning of the title. The first movement, Gyre (as in gyroscope), has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena – spinning and bouncing off the walls (like a spinning penny, which bounces off of an object unpredictably and with somewhat explosive force). The primary musical idea consists of high harmonics in the violins set against a rocking pulse in the lower strings. This basic texture is explored in various guises as the movement progresses.Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords. Snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. The music intensifies, leading to an expected climax (or anti-climax) of pizzicatos, before returning to the opening material and winding gently to a close.Like Gyre, the third movement, Spiral, explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales. The formal idea of this movement, however, has the character of a spiral, with its tendency toward implosion.SPIN was written for violinist Baird Dodge.

This rocking piece for Beginning Strings is based on the interval of a perfect fifth - thus the title! Beginning students can practice easy string crossings utilizing open strings, while the mostly unison rhythms consist of only quarter-and eighth-note durations. The stepwise finger patterns of the melody strengthen note-reading and intonation. With violin 2 doubling viola and cello doubling bass, each section of the orchestra is given the opportunity to play the melody. The provided piano part fills in during rests and can support students in maintaining a steady beat, particularly in pizzicato sections. An optional drum set part completes this upbeat first concert selection. This rocking piece for beginning strings is based on the interval of a perfect fifth - thus the title! This collection of nine classic Rock tunes spans five decades of rock history. The arrangements in Rock Philharmonic contain complete versions and lead sheets of original hit songs by top groups and artists: Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Day, Sonny and Cher, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Journey, and Green Day. Each piece includes a flexible arrangement that allows the melody, harmony, and bass parts to be played by all sections in the string orchestra, like or mixed instrument groups, quartets, or trios---allowing players to learn the component parts of rock and roll, play the classic arrangement, create their own arrangements, or perform the tunes solo. In addition to string orchestra, the arrangements are also set for electric strings with optional guitar/electric guitar, piano, and drumset. The student book contains a full-length, two-page play thru version of the melody, which follows closely the original recording and includes clearly labeled Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, and Outro sections. The bass and harmony component parts are then presented in a lead sheet format, along with a flow chart that matches the order of the Melody Line Play Thru. The teacher's book contains a full score and reproducible piano and percussion parts. Guitar chords appear in all parts. For easy practice, the accompanying CD has two tracks for each piece---a complete track and a backing track---and TNT 2 software to mix the level of each instrument, change pitch, change tempo, and create loops. The CD can also serve as an aid to learning by ear.
