If you are looking to work on the musicality of your ensemble this year, look no further than this beautiful new piece from composer George Sweet. Lush harmonies and cascading sounds make this a wonderful piece of music. It is contemporary and fresh and uses all of the forces of the string orchestra to great effect. An elegant choice for your next concert or festival performance. The title, A Silent Echo, refers to the lasting influence, or echo, that a singular event can have on the period of time following it. These echoes can result from events which range from triumphant to tragic. The resulting echo has a lasting influence, which can still be felt, on both private and public levels, long after the causal event has transpired. The piece opens with a series of inverted pyramid chords. Make sure that each voice is balanced properly with the others, so that all of the notes of the resulting chord blend together evenly. The main theme appears at m. 9 in the first violins. Once again, be careful to balance this section so that the resulting dissonances fit within the chord. The second violins play the melody at m. 19, which leads to a short B-section at m. 29. Be careful not to lose momentum when playing the pyramid chords directly preceding the B-material. After both A- and B-themes are presented again, new material occurs at m. 54 and leads the piece through a vibrant C-section that reaches a climax at m. 63. Both A- and B-themes are then restated which brings the piece to a quiet and subdued close.

Virgo is a lush and dramatic piece for string orchestra that reflects upon lost loved ones. In the case of the composer, it is a remembrance of his late brother whose astrological sign was virgo. It is an emotional harmonic journey with well-place dissonance tied together by a memorable motive. Musically, this piece is pure emotion and will stretch your young musicians to strive for musical elegance.Virgo is a lush and dramatic piece for string orchestra that is intended to reflect upon lost loved ones. In the case of the composer, it is a remembrance of his late brother, Scott Andrew Sweet. The title of the piece refers to the astrological sign ofthe composer’s brother, who was born on September 19, 1970. Virgo is dedicated to his memory. The piece utilizes many close-knit intervals and dissonances and care should be taken throughout the work to ensure that these intervals blend evenly into a singular sonority. The piece begins with an introduction that utilizes portions of the A-theme which is presented in full at m. 10 by the second violins. The theme is repeated at m. 18 and moves to a brief B-section at m. 26. The B-section utilizes inverted “pyramid†chords, and each voice should enter with a slight accent so that the rhythmic structure of the pyramid is audible. The A- and B-sections are both repeated with slight variation and are followed by a C-section at m. 58. This section utilizes melodic counterpoint between all voices, and care must be taken to maintain a strong individual presence from voice to voice. These voices lead to a dramatic arrival on beat 3 of m. 68. From this point, the C-section decreases in intensity, coming to restat m. 82. The introductory material returns at m. 84 with pizzicato accompaniment and leads to a final statement of both A- and B themes in a more developed and intense fashion. A delicate and restrained coda appears at m. 113 and brings the piece to a close.

The ancient Egyptian empire began around 3100 B.C. and continued for over 3000 years until Alexander the Great conquered the country in 332 B.C. Over the centuries, the Egyptian empire grew and flourished into a highly developed society. They invented hieroglyphics, built towering pyramids (including the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World), and the created many household items we still use today, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, eyeliner, black ink, and the forerunner of modern-day paper. Included among their achievements were a series of highly developed funerary practices and beliefs in the Afterlife. As the average lifespan of an Egyptian hovered around 30 years, living past the death of oneAs physical body was a legitimate concern. Egyptians believed that upon death, their souls would undertake a harrowing journey through the Netherworld. If they survived the horrific creatures and arduous trials that awaited them, then their souls would be reunified with their bodies (hence the need to preserve the body through mummification) and live forever in a perfect version of the life they had lived in Egypt. To achieve this, Egyptians devised around 200 magical spells and incantations to aid souls on the path to the Afterlife. These spells are collectively called The Book of the Dead. Particular spells would be chosen by the family of the deceased and inscribed on the tombAs walls and scrolls of papyrus, as well as on a stone scarab placed over the deceasedAs heart. Subsequent collections of spells and mortuary texts, such as The Book of Gates, assisted a soul in navigating the twelve stages of the Netherworld. Not only did these spells protect and guide the soul on this dangerous path, but they also served as a safeguard against any unbecoming behavior an Egyptian did while alive. For instance, if a person had robbed another while alive, there was a spell that would prevent the soulAs heart from revealing the truth when in the Hall of Judgment. Rites for the Afterlife follows the path of a soul to the Afterlife. In Inscriptions from the Book of the Dead (movement 1), the soul leaves the body and begins the journey, protected by spells and incantations written on the tombAs walls. In Passage though the Netherworld (movement 2), the soul is now on a funerary barque, being towed through the Netherworld by four of the regionAs inhabitants. We hear the soul slowly chanting incantations as the barque encounters demons, serpents, crocodiles, lakes of fire, and other terrors. The soul arrives at The Hall of Judgment in movement 3. Standing before forty-two divine judges, the soul addresses each by name and gives a A!negative confessionA(r) connected to each judge (i.e. A!I did not rob,A(r) A!I did not do violence,A(r) and so on). Afterwards, the soulAs heart is put on a scale to be weighed against a feather of MaAat, the goddess of truth. If the heart weighs more than the feather, it will be eaten by Ammut, a hideous creature that lies in wait below the scale, and the soul will die a second and permanent death (this was the worst fear of the Egyptians). But if the heart is in balance with the feather, the soul proceeds onward. The final stage of the journey is the arrival at The Field of Reeds (movement 4), which is a perfect mirror image of the soulAs life in ancient Egypt. The soul reunites with deceased family members, makes sacrifices to the Egyptian gods and goddess, harvests crops from plentiful fields of wheat under a brilliant blue sky, and lives forever next to the abundant and nourishing waters of the Nile. Rites for the Afterlife was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment on behalf of the Akropolis Reed Quintet, Calefax Reed Quintet, and the Brigham Young University Reed Quintet. -S.G.

His triptych for guitar quartet takes as inspiration the trilogy of gods of Memphis in ancient Egypt. The work is a poetic journey through the mythological landscapes of their world around 3000 BC. Sakkara is a plateau south of Cairo, where an ideal space for a culture of the afterlife developed, through tombs and the construction of the first pyramids. To this contributed the fundamental role of Imhotep, the great architect in the III Dynasty from the Sakkara area, who was almost a god in his time and most likely responsible for the stepped pyramid of Djoser. The trilogy is formed by the couple Ptah and Sekhmet, and Nefertem, their son. Ptah is the patron of artists, and at the same time the god for measuring time. Sekhmet was the wife and sister of Ptah, goddess of war -- related to the Sun god and associated with the color red. Nefertem, son of both, was the god of fragrance, of perfume and linked to the lotus flower, the symbol of rebirth. The three movements of this composition are musical spaces created on poetic associations around this mythical world and in an area that has always fascinated me: Sakkara. The work is commissioned by the Aleph-Gitarrenquartett, which is also its dedicatee. (Jose M. Sanchez-Verdu, 2022)World premiere: Karlsruhe, ZKM, January 14, 2023 Commissioned by the Aleph-Gitarrenquartett. p>

A blast from the past with a message built to last! This song of hope and love originated as the 1970s Coca-Cola jingle, considered one of the best-loved and most influential ads in TV history. It's a catchy anthem with a rock-side-to-side hook, a bubbly tune, and a few delightful counterlines. Universal themes of music and world harmony fit well on many programs---school, community, winter, spring, pop, pyramid, and more. SoundTrax and SoundPax accompaniment options are available.

This happy, joyous medium-tempo gospel swing with a truly sunny disposition takes the listener in immediately and just does not let go! An animated full-ensemble introduction leads the way to the sun-beamy, chirrupy melody, at first presented by trumpet and alto over a stop-time rhythm section. The entire sax section takes the melody next, while the brass offer uplifting commentary by way of stop-time chords. Plunger-muted trumpet is featured at the solo section, with inspiring backgrounds from the ensemble; this section may be repeated as desired to feature additional solos. Some deft linear writing follows the solo section, providing exciting dialog throughout the ensemble before leading up to an intriguing and effective pyramid that leaps forward into the stirring shout chorus. A clever tag alights on the ending plagal cadence, offering a place for the plunger-muted Trumpet to shine above the final chord. Gather ‘Round is sure to bring a smile, and destined to be a mainstay!
