As part of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute's celebration of the 75th anniversary of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, Kraft was asked to write for the same Pierrot ensemble, choosing text from the 29 unused poems of Albert Giraud's original cycle. Kraft set about writing movements based on Feerie, Mein Bruder, Harlequinade, and Selbstmord, with musical Interludes separating the movements, along with an extended Fantasmagoria preceding the concluding Selbstmord. In homage to Schoenberg, Kraft modified his own seven-tone environment to the master's 12-tone pallette, also using Schoenberg's speaking/singing style in the vocal line. Each of the first three movements was premiered at the Institute over successive years, 1988 through 1990. Selbstmord would premiere in Boston in 1991 by Musica Viva. Kraft also created an orchestration of the work over a five year period, 1990-1994. (Available on rental.).

Theodor W. Adornos Urteile uber Paul Hindemith haben die offentliche Diskussion um einen der bekanntesten deutschen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts entscheidend gepragt. Die bereits wenige Jahre spater zogernd einsetzenden Bemuhungen um eine Rehabilitation des Hindemithschen Werkes klammerten Adornos Fundamentalkritik zumeist aus und versaumten - von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen - jene direkte Auseinandersetzung mit seinen Texten, die (mit einer Verspatung von fast 30 Jahren) im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht.

Ran was asked for a new work for Mimi Stillman's Dolce Suono Ensemble and their Mahler/Schoenberg 2012 concert series. Creating a piece that would be at once an homage and a companion piece to Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire was an intriguing challenge. Ran ultimately chose poems and excerpts that reference the moon in a riveting performance setting for flute (doubling piccolo), piano, cello, and soprano/narrator/actress. With English and Hebrew texts, Moon Songs consists of four acts with two entr-actes. Extensive program notes and performance notes are included. Ran advises, Demanding as her sung part is, the singer...needs to be as much an actress as a singer.
