Includes two copies of the performance score These pieces are inspired by the music and spirit of the Athabascan people of Alaska's boreal forest. The first and third dances are based on songs by Joe Beetus, a Koyukon elder from the village of Huslia. The second dance is based on a short traditional song of the Dena'ing people of the Kenai Peninsula, as remembered by the late Peter Kalifornsky and transcribed by the late Thomas F. Johnston. In their original setting these melodies would be sung in unison, with no harmony or counterpoint. Working as a composer in the Western tradition, I have extended and transformed them in many ways. I have 'borrowed' and 'set' these melodies with permission and with the hope that my treatment of them conveys my profound respect for their origins. The second and third pieces are derived from my setting of poems by Adeline Peter Raboff written in the dialect of her Gwich'in people, who inhabit the country from Arctic Village to Old Crow. I offer this music as a gesture of respect to the first peoples of the Northern Interior and the Kenai Peninsula. - John Luther Adams.

Drums, cymbals, and gongs usually provide the musical accompaniment to this beautiful and colorful performance. Percussion Accompaniment Track Downloads: with click without click. (1:30).

According to Ermelinda Paz , Marujo do Rosario (literally translated from the Portuguese as Sailor of the Rosary) comes from the hydrographic region of the Sao Francisco River, a basin that includes the states of Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, and Alagoas. This song most likely belongs to a style of dramatic dance called cheganca-de-marujo (arrival of sailor). In this tragicomic street drama, the community of actors enact a story in which they demonstrate their experiences as if they were in a vessel lost at sea. In this dance, several characters dressed as sailors and carrying small sail boats on their shoulders, parade through the streets singing and dancing to a march. When they arrive at a determined house, they place their little sail boats on the floor and start the dramatic play. This song seems to be performed when the sailors arrive at the chosen location. The Portuguese lyrics E com licenca e, olele, e com licenca do dono da casa, o e com licenca e means please excuse me, I have permission from the houses owner to come in. This arrangement is scored for three-part mixed with optional baritone, piano, and pandeiro. The pandeiro is a Brazilian frame drum with jingles played with the hands, similar to the orchestral tambourine. It is used in various music styles but particularly in samba and bossa nova. In fact, feel free to substitute the pandeiro with the orchestral tambourine. The text is very short and simple. To make your singers Portuguese pronunciation more accurate, do not close final m or n. Just nasalize them. With a variety of musical elements reminiscent of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk songs, Tompkins aptly utilizes the cultural background of Biblical poetry in this dance-like setting for the emerging treble chorus. Mood shifts in the piano part, chorus, and text make this an excellent piece for experimenting with a variety of timbres, vocal colors, and expression. Highly suitable for year-round programming needs.Adonai, My Shepherd (Psalm 23) is an English translation* of a song taken from the Tehillim (Psalms), an ancient Hebrew text which is also part of a larger collection of sacred writings, called the Ketuvim. The book of Psalms can also be found in the Bible's Old Testament. Designed to recognize the cultural background of the poetry, the musical elements of this piece are reminiscent of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk songs. The tambourine has been added as a rhythmic device, appropriate to some types of Middle Eastern folk music, and to suggest a dance-like atmosphere. Mood shifts in the piano, chorus and text make this an excellent piece for experimenting with a variety of timbres, vocal colors and expression. For ensembles looking to incorporate added artistic dimension to performances, choirs are encouraged to make use of the performance space through creative blocking and/or movement appropriate to the style of each section. *English translation is adapted from The Complete Jewish Bible, (tr. In June of 1980, Aki Takahashi was preparing to leave Buffalo, New York. Morton Feldman, knowing her reputation as a pianist specializing in new music, had invited her to be an artist in residence at the university where he taught. But now it was time for her to go back to Japan. At their last meeting, Feldman gave a musical score to Takahashi as a gift. It was a copy of John Cage's solo piano piece Cheap Imitation with annotations by Feldman. He told her that this was an instrumental version of this piece for flute, piano, and glockenspiel. He signed the title page, just under the original title: INSTRUMENTAL VERSION (Fl, Pf, Glock) Morton Feldman Buffalo, N.Y. Winter 1980Dedicated to Aki Takahashi Four different artists were bound up in this single gesture: John Cage, Erik Satie, Morton Feldman, and Aki Takahashi. The story of this gift, a story of memory and connection, unfolds over most of the 20th century. John Cage was always devoted to the music of Eric Satie. In 1970 Cage was supposed to create a new two-piano transcription of Satie's Socrate for a Cunningham dance, but he was unable to get permission from the publisher. Even worse, he could not even get performance rights to use the published piano-vocal score of Socrate. Cage's creative solution was to make a piano piece that maintained the exact metrical and phrase structure of Satie's Socrate, but with different notes, thus avoiding copyright issues. He called this piece Cheap Imitation. Cunningham responded by calling his dance Second Hand. Feldman arranged Cage's piano version of Cheap Imitation for a trio of flute (doubling on alto flute and piccolo), piano, and glockenspiel. This is the same instrumentation that was used in Feldman's 1978 Why Patterns? and which (somewhat expanded) was the basis for two of his major works in the 1980s: Crippled Symmetry (1983) and For Philip Guston (1984). Feldman made his ar.

Trombone & Piano Duration: 17' Composed: 2013 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC …the audience loved Red Dragonfly. Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Difficulty Level: Trombone 6 (Professional) Piano 5 (Advanced) See also Red Dragonfly, Concerto for Trombone and Band for the version with band accompaniment. See composer website for audio sample.
