Spinning Jenny is a portrait of Leigh, Lancashire circa 1948 and one of a series of occasional pieces inspired by Davies' youth in Salford. Spinning Jenny Street was a noisy, hazardous street, clangerous with industry and activity when davies was at Grammar school in 1945. A modest work, but one which reflects many aspects of the place, period and people it was inspired by. Commissioned by the BBC, it was first performed on 21st July 199 as part of the BBC promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Davies himself. This is the miniature format of the full orchestral score..

The second of the Quartets commissioned by the Naxos label was completed in January 2003. This work swings between nervous virtuosic energy to the serene calm of an extended Lento, with exotic harmonies reminiscent of Bartok, and is characterised by it's sharp and unpredictable contrasts. First performed by the Maggini Quartet on 11 July 2003 at the Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. This is the score in a pocket-size format. The set of parts is available, catalogue number CH66594-01.

A sweet miniature composed for solo piano in 1937, Mystic Flute consists of two voices: a simple melody in the harmonic minor scale balanced by an ostinato accompaniment in 7/8 meter that gives the work a hypnotic and ceremonial spirit. The melodic line begins in the top voice, before moving to the bass voice, and returning to the top voice with small ornamentation. No notes were removed from the piano score in this guitar arrangement by Aaron Larget-Caplan, and all dynamic and phrase markings follow the original score as well. This arrangement was premiered on July 29, 2018 at the Coaster Theater in Cannon Beach, Oregon.
