A Requiem for Mr William Lawes is a contemporary work for male voices and viol trio with texts by Thomas Fuller, Antony Wood, and John Jenkins. The music evokes and quotes passages and harmonies from Lawes' consort music; the unresolved dissonances, sometimes verging on atonality, the quirky off-kilter rhythmic structures, and the vocal quality of the lines. A Requiem for Mr William Lawes was first performed on September 7, 2016 by Gallicantus at The Trigonale Festival, Austria. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill.

Requi em is a powerfully appealing, tender exploration of love and loss. Grounded in tradition while incorporating a present-day harmonic language, two Gregorian Chant motives are interwoven throughout the lush harmonies and soaring melodies. The level of difficulty is within the reach of many choirs and most orchestral players, making it an attractive choice for church or concert hall. A new translation of the traditional text makes it possible to perform the work entirely in English or entirely in Latin. Available accompaniments for piano, organ only, organ and winds, or chamber orchestra. Whether your choir sings a major work twice a year or is looking to try a multi-movement work for the first time, it is an excellent choice for the worship space or concert hall. The work has a flexible duration (28-40 min.) depending on the inclusions optional solo and a cappella movements. 40 min. – Complete – All movements - 34 min. – Without Solo Movements (5 And 9) - 33 min. – Without Unaccompanied Movements (2 and 7) - 28 min. – Without Unaccompanied or Solo Movements (1,3,4,6,9, 10 only) There are 3 accompaniment options: Piano/Organ only; Organ and Winds (5 players + org.); Chamber Orch. ISBN 9790070111836. Text: Bengt Pohjanen / from the Ordinary Mass.
For soprano, bass, mixed chorus and orchestra. Lyrics from the death mass and by Bengt Pohjanen in English translation by John Hearne.Fredrik Sixten: When my dear friend Patrik Runeke became seriously ill and died - only 37 years old - feelings and thoughts concering life and death overwhelmed me. It was natural for me to turn to Bengt Pohjanen, with whom I had collaborated earlier, to ask him to formulate: * words of anger and of gratitude * words of guilt and of forgiveness * words of consolation, of love and hope. These words of Bengt's, in combination with the classical texts from the Latin Requiem Mass, form a kind of testament to mankind's yearning for unity and perfection. In the final movement, In Paradisum, this yearning is borne forth to the God whom Bengt describes as being: Wisdom deep and loving. Stronger than death. Order a free promotion CD below.

Scored for baritone solo, small 'narrator' chorus, large chorus and orchestra, MacMillan's first Passion setting was composed in 2007. Lasting 87 minutes the work is divided into two parts, with 10 movements overall. As Paul Spicer has commented, “The originality of the St John Passion lies in MacMillan's ability to mix old with new, rather in the manner of Bach in his day. There are passages of sumptuous polyphony and there is a fresh look at the text where passages of Latin are interspersed with the Gospel story in English. In movement seven ('Jesus and his Mother'), MacMillan introduces not only part of the Stabat Mater but also his own words ('Lully, lulla, my dear darling'). The final movement, which is purely orchestral, is a kind of via doloroso march with a Scots lament over quite brass chords. The string writing here, with its elegiac cello lines, is deeply reminiscent of the early 20th-century English school. This should be the War Requiem of the 21st century.&rdquo.
