When the family heirs to the legendary Galimir String Quartet (three sisters and a brother) gathered to commemorate the centenary birth years of these famed performers, they chose Ellen Taaffe Zwilich to commission for this honor. The composer, who has also worked professionally as a violinist, responded with a one-movement odyssey entitled Voyage, cross-breeding her own characteristic style with glimpses of Viennese waltzes and other Galimir flavor. There is a sweet, sad lyricism to this work, a hectic discord..., some wailing and moaning, these moods alternating with dancing klezmer rhythms of Jewish wedding music that take over and make things right in the end. The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of Antonín Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerate”, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.

The term ‘freygish’ is typically found in klezmer music but derives from a much older cantorial mode, also known under several other titles including the Ahava Rabbah mode, the Mode of Supplication, and Altered Phrygian mode. It is used for the setting of ‘Ahava Rabbah’, or ‘abounding love’, the Ashkenazi prayer and blessing sung during the synagogue morning services. When performed, either in synagogue or in a klezmer setting, the mode can be developed into a variety of short phrases and melodic forms. Jeremy Arden has taken this beautiful irregular scale and filtered its melodic forms through my own musical sensibilities to create a dialogue between Jewish musical traditions and the western musical canon, expressed here through the rigorous crucible of the string quartet.

A Klezmer Wedding is a set of four dances, newly-composed but based on traditional models. The Doina is an expressive chant for three successive soloists; it twists and turns with the wailing lament of a shepherd's pipe. Next follows the Hora, a slow Rumanian dance in three with a mood that reflects the wedding's solemn vows. A Chusidl, with a moderate speed and bouncy rhythms, gets the party to the dance floor. The concluding Freylach (happy, but still in a minor key!) takes the bride, groom, and guests to the edge of frenzy.Titles: Doina * Hora * Chusidl * Freylach.
