In the autumn of 1974 György Kurtág began to copy selected pieces from the series Games into a music notebook for Zoltán Kocsis who had been his student in earlier years and who, even today, is one of its most authentic performers. Kocsis played from this notebook in the first public performance of Games in 1974. The gradually expanding series of piano pieces also appeared in print in the course of later decades; however, since then he has used this collection - expanded over 32 years since by Kurtág - whenever he plays pieces from Games in concert. Since the time of this 1974 concert, as he writes: 'I didn't know that the spiral notebook I received at the premiere would later become, as it were, my permanent companion. That I would take it with me from Japan to Canada, from Australia to Iceland, travelling to the world's most prominent concert halls, surviving fire damage, flood, transport catastrophes, theft attempts, forced landings and so on, and that - well beyond the intention of its being 'copied with love' - it would include works and sketches for which this notebook would become the principal source.' The manuscript gives a glimpse into Kurtág's workshop from the viewpoint of both performers and musicologists. The former can understand more from Kurtág's handwriting about the composer's intentions than from the printed score. The musicologists, however, can study the historical origins of the works: some works can be found here in more than one version, others appear in a version different from the printed score. The publication is accompanied by a booklet and a CD supplement. The booklet contains Kocsis's own personal preface, as well as András Wilheim's essay providing information about the collection and the pieces contained therein. On the CD we hear 11 works performed by Kocsis, from a recording made in 1982 which has not previously been commercially issued.

“Oh, sometimes I get a good feeling, yeahGet a feeling that I never, never, never, never had before …â€In its original form, “Levels†is more of an instrumental number featuring a short passage from a song by soul-singer Etta James. The energy of this exhilarating electro-pop piece with the inimitable Avicii sound is an ear-catching delight and brings audiences to their feet: a good time is guaranteed!Th e editor:Hans Vainikainen (b. 1976) hails from a new generation of conductors in the Swedish choral tradition. His conducting repertoire covers a wide range of genres and eras, from Mahler’s Eighth Symphony to the Swedish DJ Avicii. In 2005 he won the Swedish Conductors’ Prize, and two years later he was appointed artistic director of the Katarina kyrka, the home of Katarinakörerna, one of Sweden’s largest choral societies.Hans Vainikainen heads Stockholm’s Katarinakörerna with more than 500 singers in various combinations. Their programmes cover both sacred and secular music. In his search for suitable arrangements, his eye fell on one the world’s best-known pop artists, Tim Bergling, known professionally as Avicii. He then arranged three of Avicii’s best songs for classical choirs, intending them to be encore pieces.“Hey Brotherâ€, “Levels†and “Without you†are now available for six-part mixed or female choir. The arrangements offer a wide variety of vocal and choral possibilities and attention has been paid that all parts are of the same musical standard. Whether homophonic or unisono, they artfully intertwine from one passage to the next. However, for all their sophistication the arrangements remain manageable and easy to learn, displaying the typical groove of each Avicii song within a multi-layered texture.

English Dances, Set I, opus 27, is a light classic composition that was written for orchestra by the British composer Malcolm Arnold in 1950. The set contains four dances that continue without pause: the individual movements are indicated by the tempo markings. The work came about at the request of Bernard de Nevers, at the time the head of publisher Alfred Lengnick & Co., who asked Arnold to write a suite of dances as an English counterpart to Dvo ák’s Slavonic Dances and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances. The première took place in the spring of 1951, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. Following the success of the first set, DeNevers asked the composer to write a second one, which Arnold completed the next year (Op. 33). The Andantino from the first set has been skilfully arranged and orchestrated for brass band by Ray Farr. Perpetuum Mobile, meaning perpetual motioni, is a Latin term that describes an impossible situation in which a substance has infinite energy. This situation is impossible because it violates the first and second laws of Newton. But it is possible in music. Imagine a musical piece that is a continuous stream of notes. These are exactly the etudes in this album. They do not stop, they are always in motion and they can be played continuously. Etudes are solo pieces, purposed to help the musician practice his technique. In this album, each etude is designed to practice another technique. In addition, the etudes in this album are arranged according to the circle of fifths - each etude ends in a key which is dominant to the beginning of the next etude, even the last etude to the first one, and so on and so forth. This further emphasizes the infinite mobility of the music in this piece. Once you enter the loop, you can't get out of it. All the etudes start in a minor key, as a symbol of the sadness of the matter, and end in a major key, to represent the hope, a false hope, that perhaps the next etude will take you out of the loop. This album is a three-year-long project, in which I gathered ideas from the environment in which I live, from the people in it and from their thoughts, from life that continues all the time, and the music that will never stop. Maayan Tal, 17, is a young Israeli musician, pianist and composer.

Composer Bud Woodruff takes his musical inspiration for Adventurer's Dream from a rooster named Wally. Mr. Woodruff turns this charming four-note crow into the main thematic material for this piece that is reminiscent of classic movie scores. The principal theme to this piece has an interesting history . We had a very young rooster named Wally . He had a quite rhythmic four-pitched crow, which was very unique and consistent . As he aged, his crow settled into pitches and the opening melodic figure of this piece is the very pitches and rhythm of Wally’s crow . However, Wally had a touch of a glissando between the last two pitches, which I chose to eliminate, for musicality’s sake . Wally's crow is spun out in different ways and used one way or another in all the sections of the piece . Wally was a very energetic, if not egotistical, young bird, and the piece should be performed accordingly, in a dashing, swashbuckling, heroic style, which Wally would appreciate greatly and agree that it was very appropriate!Rehearsal suggestions:The most difficult thing to accomplish in this work will be deciding if you want the repeated eight-note figure on the string or off the string . I don’t care as long as it sounds staccato . On the string, it needs to be played at or by the camber point; off the string, that point will change depending upon your tempo, but the stroke itself should remain consistent .Although the basses never have the melody, they are a critically important section and can make or break this piece . Their part counters the others and fills in rhythmic gaps in a number of places . It needs to be played aggressively and metronomically; they are the glue that makes the piece work . The cellos need to sing for all they are worth at m . 63 and do so with joy in their hands . Their theme needs to be very lyrical and smooth . The countermelody at m . 79 should be understated, yet not buried while being intertwined with the cellos’ theme . It harkens back to the main theme and needs a dreamy quality to it .The piece was written as a string orchestra piece . The optional harp part was added later and is not necessary for an effective performance of the piece . However, it does add some extra variety and color to the piece, and reinforces the basses when they fill in those rhythmic gaps to which I referred earlier .A very special thanks goes to harpist Jane Minnis for the great and insightful suggestions for this part .Thank you for playing this piece . I trust you will enjoy it as much as I do .

All the pieces in this book have been selected from the Méthode Complète by H. Klosé. Practically every saxophonist with a classical education comes across these pieces during his or her studies. Over the years, their value has been proven from a musical as well as a technical perspective. However, this music never had a piano accompaniment - which is of vital importance for musical development and for concert performances. In this new edition a piano part has been written by the well-known composer Roland Kernen. On the CD you will hear a performance of the complete piece followed by a play-along piano accompaniment for use if you do not have a pianist to accompany you.

Ruth Schonthal's compositions, which reflect the concerns of today's world, display a unique blend of her deeply rooted European tradition, depth of feeling, and masterful blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.Ruth Schonthal never followed the prevalent contemporary aesthetic fashions. At a time when Anton Webern and John Cage were the American role models, she followed her own musical path, never denying her own classic-romantic heritage. The extraordinarily varied impressions she absorbed in the course of her life in different parts of the world provided the foundation of her musical style. Through exposure to diverse influences and teaching methods in Germany, Sweden, Mexico and the USA, Ruth Schonthal was able to extrapolate an unusually rich mixture of compositional techniques from these experiences. She used them to form a comprehensive stylistic synthesis.

Antonio Valente blind, Neapolitan since a long time according to the list of Neapolitan musicians by Scipione Cerreto and organist in S. Angelo a Nilo in Naples, is known in modern times for his two volumes of keyboard music: Versi spirituali published in 1580 and, some years before, the volume here in transcription, Intavolatura de cimbalo, printed by Giuseppe Cacchio in 1576.This volume has many original features: first keyboard tablature ever printed in Naples, itâ??s not written in musical characters but in a number-based system never met, according to the current studies, in any other print or manuscript both in and outside Italy. The dedication letter, written by Fraâ?? Alberto Mazza, praises Valente as the inventor of this writing method, so easy and effective that everybody, even uncouth youths that did not know music and keyboard, could attain the result of playing from it in two months. The Intavolatura presents different genres of music: a fantasia, six ricercatas, a Salve Regina on a cantus firmus, four vocal chansons intabulated for keyboard with more or less diminutions, and nine dances, variations and dance/variations on long-living tenors like Romanesca or Zefiro. There are no liturgical compositions, both because unsuitable in a collection for amateurs and because Valente will publish a new book of sacred music in a few years. The book is a sort of compendium of the keyboard genres of the period, similar to some older Spanish publications and to the later Neapolitan ones by Trabaci and Majone. Other contemporary volumes on the contrary choose to present a single type of composition: this is the case of the Versetti by Valente and the Ricercate by Rocco Rodio.

D major could be described as the great extrovert key in late Baroque string music, and Florentine composer Martino Bitti's four movement sonata, in the classic slowaEURfastaEURslowaEURf ast configuration, does not disappoint in this respect. In particular, the second movement, an allemande like Allegro, tests the player's ability to execute broken chord figures neatly. Bitti's artistic personality always shines through, however, and the music never loses its poise, melodic beauty remaining its highest goal.

Composer's Note: The Lullaby from The Unicorns arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a six-movement suite from it called The Unicorns. There are three songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Soderstrom and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Bjorklund at Ekensbergskyrkan, Solna, Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith. The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano, which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis, and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute an piano. Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo.

A beloved star in the international jazz world, AliRyerson has developed a large and enthusiastic following, particularly among alto and bass flutists in the traditionally classicalflute community. A dedicated jazzlover who hails from Canberra, Australia, Vivien is an accomplished flutist and guitarist. (Her day job is at the NationalInstitute of Health in Maryland, as Program Director in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the NationalHuman Genome Research Institute). Vivien commissioned me to write her a flute piece, something with a jazz feel anda written-out flute solo that would sound as if she were improvising. I enthusiastically agreed and wrote a tune titledAll Things Being Equal (a wink and a nod to the mathematical side of her personality!). I performed it only once, witha rhythm section, just before handing Vivien the sheet music. I never gave it a second thought until a couple of yearslater, when I found myself on a recording date with bass flutist extraordinaire, Wendy Stern. We so enjoyed working (andplaying!) together that day, that we vowed to join forces again as soon as possible. To speed up the process, I decided towrite us a duet. When I sat down to start composing, the melody I had previously written for Vivien kept popping intomy head. It finally occurred to me that it would make the perfect duet. So, after some major reworking of the score,FOLKTALE emerged, and I now have two very good friends to thank for its inspiration!

The Geminis Concertino was written in 2005 and dedicated to Gerard Claret and the National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra (ONCA).
The work, as its name implies, is a small-scale concerto for violin and 15 string instruments. Its score is basically a chamber piece in which the solo part never takes an overly virtuoso role. Conceived as a single movement, played without interruption, its internal construction consists of three classic sections: A, bars 1-72, B, bars 73-161, and C, from bar 162 to the end of the piece. Part B begins with the two opening measures of Bela Bartok's Violin Concerto simply as a reminder of a composer and a work that has impressed me since I was very young.I should confess that the entire Geminis Concertino has a certain Bartokian air that I attribute to the love I have always professed for this composer and that lately seems to affect me much as it did in my youth.--The author. Barcelona, march 2006

Hardcover full score. Introductory texts presented in English, German, and Polish. The Lithuanian Rhapsody (Rapsodia litewska), Op. 11 is the third - after Returning Waves and Eternal Songs - of the six symphonic poems by Mieczyslaw Karlowicz. Composition was probably taking shape during the summer months of 1906 in Warsaw. Lithuanian Rhapsody differs significantly from the other parts of 'programme cycle' which Mieczyslaw Karlowicz's symphonic poems may be regarded as forming. This is a work based primarily on thematic material derived from folk output (something that would never again occur in the composer's brief biography), compared with the earlier score of Eternal Songs or the later Stanislaw and Anna Oswiecim it displays much greater stylistic independence of the German music embodied around the turn of the twentieth century.

The Full Score for Peter Maxwell Davies' fourth in a series of ten string quartets commissioned by the Naxos Recording company, first performed by the Maggini Quartet on 20th August 2004 at the Chapel of the Royal Palace, Oslo, Norway, as part of the Olso Chamber Music Festival. Composer Note: The fourth Naxos quartet was written in January and February of 2004, with the intention of producing something lighter and much less fierce than its predecessor, an unpremeditated and spontaneous reaction to the illegal invasion of Iraq. I returned to the well-known Brueghel picture of children's games (1560, now in Vienna), which had been the inspiration for my sixth Strathclyde Concerto, for flute and orchestra. These illustrations liberated my musical imagination, but I feel it would limit the listener's perception to be too specific about which game relates to exactly which section of the work. Suffice it to say that there is vigorous play - leap-frog, bind the devil with a cord, truss, wrestling - alongside quieter pastimes - masks, guess whom I shall choose, courting, odds and evens. The single movement juxtaposes these activities as abruptly and intimately as they occur in Brueghel. Rather as the eye is taken into different perspectives and proportions of scale within the picture, taking liberties which would never be present in, for instance, Brunelleschi architectural drawings, so here, with a constant sequence of transformation processes, I have distorted the neat, precise implications of modal progression, expressed in the unison opening phrase (from F to B through A sharp/B flat), so that the ear is led, en route, into the sound equivalents of strange passageways and closed rooms: sicut exposition ludus. As work on the quartet progressed I became aware that I was reading into, and behind the games, adult motives and implications, concerning aggression and war, with their consequences. It was impossible to escape into innocent childhood fantasy. The nature of the F to B progression underlying the whole construction derives from a passage in the development of the first movement of Mahler's Third Symphony, and the opening of Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. However, unlike in these models, here a real - if temporary - sense of resolution occurs at the close of the quartet: as when the curtain falls on the reconciled Count and Countess in 'Figaro' one wonders how long the F/B truce will hold, and games break out again. The quartet is dedicated to Giuseppe Rebecchini, Roman architect, and friend since the nineteen-fifties.
