The title, Live On, by Larry Clark, is taken from Chrissie Pinney's poem about grief and loss. The piece is meant to depict the personality of Linda Mann, to whom it is dedicated. The opening is poignant and pensive, followed by a whimsical theme which alludes to happy thoughts of a life well-lived. The piece builds to a triumphant?conclusion based on an augmented version of the theme.
Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Manns impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association.
In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should depict Lindas personality - dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like. They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher.
After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.
Live On
Now as I live on
Without you
I hope to keep
The pieces of you
That I loved so dearly
Your mannerisms
And compassionate character
And smiles through struggle
So that you
May live on too
-Chrissie Pinney
I reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann.
The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece.
After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.
It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.

Yosemite Falls depicts the wide open spaces of this magnificent western treasure, exploring new sounds and harmonies in a fresh approach from Sean O'Loughlin. However, this work retains his signature flourishes, such as angular rhythm, drive, and punctuated harmonies. A very strong choice for your more advanced ensembles in contest or festival performance. The grandeur and spectacle of Yosemite National Park is the inspiration for the music of Yosemite Falls. Located in the northwest corner of California, this park continues to be a natural wonder to all who visit it each year. The falls are particularly beautiful in the spring when all the snow from winter is melting away. The piece begins with a pulsing rhythmic figure that will return periodically throughout the piece. Bring out the dynamic contrast in the section that follows at m. 9. The main melody appears at m. 17 and should have a light and airy feel to it. The secondary melody comes in at m. 30 and has a much more legato and lyrical quality. This melody continues to grow and expand until m. 44 when the opening rhythmic idea returns. This rhythm gets developed further throughout the nextfew sections until the main and secondary melodies collide at m. 67. Bring out the inner lines to create a lush accompaniment. This culminates in a unison statement of the melody at m. 83. The silence on the downbeat of m. 84 creates space and anticipation for the pulsing rhythms that gain momentum to the exciting conclusion.

Joseph Compello depicts the planet Mars with The Red Planet, a heavy, brooding piece in 5/4. This piece provides cross-curricular opportunities to work with the school’s science department. Best of all, it will allow your group to show off the maturity of their playing. The Red Planet is an original concert piece in time for a string ensemble with at least one year’s training. The opening section should be played in a boldly aggressive style. To give the parts a less complex appearance, staccato quarter-notes are used in lieu of eighth-notes followed by eight-rests. This notation will enable young players to count with greater ease.Notes on the performance:Measure 7 introduces the main theme in the first violins.Measure 15 introduces a secondary theme which becomes increasingly important as thepiece progresses.Measure 24 introduces a third theme and its counter-melody. This section should be played in a lyrically flowing style, in contrast to the main theme from m. 9.Measure 35, marked fugato, will require particular attention to entrances. The playing style reverts to the boldness of the opening mood.Measure 55 is the recapitulation with an addition of a new chromatic line. This line, given to first violins, should be soaring and equal in volume to the main theme. Note that the secondary theme (originally played in m. 15) is played only after the repeat.Measure 66 should be played much more slowly and in a grandiose manner. Here, the main theme should be given much more weight than it received in the opening statement.Note that at m. 68 the secondary theme concludes the piece ponderously in thelow strings. The conductor may dictate each note at this point and disregard the meter. This arrangement has been recorded by Carl Fischer. The performance is available on line free of charge.Thank you for choosing this composition. I hope your students and audience will find it instructiveand enjoyable.Joseph CompelloGlen Arm, Maryland.

A lively and exhilarating new piece for beginning string groups, Effervescence lives up to its title but is so much more. It also contains lush harmonies, sweeping melodic gestures reminiscent of the America school of composers like Copland. It is a sophisticated musical presentation, but with limited technical demands, making it easy for young students, but very musically satisfying.Effervesce nce is commonly known as the act of a gas escaping a liquid and the “fizzing” result that occurs. A secondary definition, however, is a show of liveliness or exhilaration. It is this secondary definition that is the inspiration for this piece. The piece begins with a broad, sweeping introduction followed by a statement of the main theme in the first Violins at m. 11. The second Violins perform the melody at m. 19, while the first Violins perform a countermelody which morphs into the main idea of the B-section that follows at m. 27. The Celli and Bass restate the main theme at m. 35, while the upper strings provide a sweeping harmony with a somewhat “Americana” feel. After a restatement of the B-section at m. 43, a subdued section with new material occurs at m. 51. This pushes into a final restatement of the main theme at m. 59 and leads to a vibrant conclusion, followed by a pianissimo afterthought.

Black Mast conjures images of a dramatic life on the high seas of a pirate captain and crew. The music is in minor with angular melodies and contrast created through changes in tempo. A maestoso presentation of the theme leads to a dramatic conclusion.Black Mast conjures images of a dramatic life on the high seas in the service of a pirate captain and crew. The work opens with a dramatic introduction, followed by the main theme at m. 9. At m. 17 a secondary theme related to the primary melody emerges; the primary theme reappears at m. 25 in the violas and cellos. A briskersecond theme, at a faster tempo, derived from the introduction emerges in m. 33. This second theme alternates with a lyrical courtly dance theme beginning in m. 45. This section reflects the non-combative aspects of life at sea and the joy of moving before the wind. At m. 73 the piece returns to the vigorous first theme andthe secondary theme from m. 17 leading to a dramatic, swashbuckling ending.Care should be taken to contrast the robust music of the primary themes and the more dance-like music of the middle section. I am privileged to be able to share this work with you and your students. I hope that it serves to both entertain and educate.—Peter TerryBluffton, Ohio 2016.

This piece should depict images of kings and castles, knight and horses, dragons and damsels in distress. It is a bold and aggressive piece throughout, but a contrasting lush secondary theme for variety. Typical of why Larry's music is so popular are his signature forceful figures, and strong melodic content that will stimulate students to practice it over and over again. .This piece should depict images of kings and castles, knight and horses, dragons and damsels in distress. It should be bold and aggressive throughout, but never with bad tone. There is then contrasted by the lush second theme that is presented first in a softer thin orchestration, but later becomes a change for the whole ensemble to play in a strong, but lush presentation of this theme. One thing that is important to me when writing music for younger students is to offer pieces that challenge all student in the ensemble and give every section an important part of the musical presentation, which naturally should include some melodic material. Every member of the ensemble wants to feel that they are contributing to the collective whole. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2018.
