Prayer and praise hymns have become an integral part of the sacred hymnody of the African American religious experience. Twenty years after the Emancipation, the children of the slaves found themselves living in the reality of separateness, and their religious practice turned increasingly inward. A unique body of hymnody grew out of that period, approximately 1885–1925. These are songs of Southern origin, of a rural people working the land. These songs are different from spirituals and Black meter music, yet show their influences. These songs are Bible-based, highly repetitive in accord with the nature of oral tradition, and of anonymous authorship. Wyatt Tee Walker has researched this segment of the history of African American church music more than any other known scholar. His original three paperback volumes have been edited and combined by James Abbington into this clothbound edition worthy of its historical and musical significance. The book now includes a recording of the twenty-four selected “prayer and praise†hymns researched by Rev. Dr. Walker. This exciting CD highlights not only the hymns, but the singing style of the period as well, being faithful to the impromptu harmonies and dissonance brought about by inspired song. Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival.Singapura is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a somewhat altered form.Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fastbourrée. As contrast there is a second authentic melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning. ‘Singapura €™ is de oorspronkelijke naam van Singapore in het Maleis, de originele taal van deze stadstaat. Omdat Singapore een van de belangrijkste havens ter wereld is, opent de componist met een ‘zeemansdans†. Ook de authentiekemelodie Chan Mali Chan is te herkennen. Sona ta 5, in A major, is the only work in the set to feature the ‘classic’ three-movement design in its symmetrical Fast–Slow–F ast configuration. Its opening Vivace makes considerable demands on the flautist’s technique, and the accompanist, too, has some lively interventions. A short Andante, in A minor, recaptures the style of the slow movement of an operatic sinfonia. High spirits return in the concluding Allegro comodo, which manages to be frothy and substantial at the same time. Sonata 6 is in G minor, traditionally a key for serious utterances. Its muscular opening Largo packs in a wealth of interesting rhythmic designs and articulations for the flautist. The influence of violinistic style is clearly seen in the Allegro that follows. The finale is composite: its ‘frame’ is an Affettuoso in minuet rhythm, but its ‘core’ is a Poco Allegro in G major with the character of a second minuet. Despite its outward charm, this movement retains much of the heft of the first two movements.

Scen es from Welsh life and landscape are a frequent source of inspiration for the music of Rhian Samuel, and, in Dovey Junction, the joyful atmosphere of families en route to the Welsh seaside via the little west-coast railway line is the cue for a crackling scherzo for brass quintet. A snappy rondo theme insists on dressing up in a different texture each time it returns. In between, pithy staccato phrases for trumpets are the setting for more cantabile figures from horn and trombone, and a brief and bluesy episode for muted solo trumpet suggests lazy days on the beach, or grown-up nostalgia for holidays long past. But the energy and sense of expectation remain unstoppable from the first bar to the last, and all five instruments sweep the music into a furious coda that ends the work in riotous high spirits. Dovey Junction was written for performance by Borealis Brass (Alaska) at the UNESCO World Forum on Music, Los Angeles, USA in October 20005, at the invitation of the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica, (Rome).
