This lesson is intended for advanced players looking for ways to voice chords and arrange tunes in ways that sound rich and complex but feel nimble under the hands. We?ll look mostly at arrangements I?ve made of blues and fiddle melodies, and also look at the playing of the remarkable Johnny St. Cyr.We begin our lesson with Ma Rainey?s Yonder Comes the Blues. This is followed by Jelly Roll Morton?s Jelly Roll Blues. Composed in 1915 and was one of the first published jazz compositions. Johnny St. Cyr was a famous New Orleans musician who played both guitar and the six-string banjo. He recorded with Louis Armstrongs Hot Five and Hot Seven bands. He also played with Jelly Roll Mortons Red Hot Peppers. His Guitar Blues is a tour-de-force and challenge for any fingerstyle guitarist. We finish our lesson with the Mineola Rag first recorded by the East Texas Serenaders. Titles include: Yonder Come The Blues, Jelly Roll Blues, Guitar Blues and Mineola Rag Detailed tab/music PDF file on the DVD. 96 minutes. DVD is region 0, playable worldwide.

The Hawaiian word for slack key guitar, kī hō??alu, means to ??loosen the key? or retune some of the strings to create a harmonious sound with an open or alternate tuning. Slack key is a fingerpicking style characterized by strong alternating bass lines played with the thumb. While slack key can be played on any guitar, most players prefer a nylon- or steel-stringed acoustic instrument. This book presents 25 intermediate to advanced traditional and original tunes in the Hawaiian slack key style. Melodies are often harmonized in sixths or thirds played with or without double stops. Techniques like syncopated bass lines, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and harmonics are tastefully employed to evoke the images of ocean breezes, swaying palms, hula dancers and white sandy beaches. The author writes, ??Unless you grew up playing slack key, it??s hard to get from the material presented in most books and DVDs to a fluid, play-it-your-own-way style.? This book seeks to reveal the insights the author has gleaned from studying and jamming with some of the giants of the slack key style, and help you develop a style all your own. Includes access to online audio tracks of all 25 relaxing but challenging Hawaiian slack key tunes.

This solo collection presents 19 iconic melodies from the American traditional song book plus 6 modern original compositions by William Bay, president of Mel Bay Publications; all selections have been arranged in tablature for the 5-string banjo in gDGBD tuning by Catalonian multi-instrumentalist and bluegrass specialist, Llu?s G?mez.Any collection of American ballads would be incomplete without settings of the beautiful melodies penned by Stephen Foster, several of which appear here including Beautiful Dreamer, Darling Nellie Gray, I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, and Hard Times, Come Again No More. Some of these tunes are arranged in uncommon banjo keys, all without retuning the banjo or using a capo. These keys may be challenging at first but will teach you a lot about the banjo fretboard. The author?s generous preface offers tips on practice, performance and interpretation rarely found in tablature collections such as these, but this book has it all, including online recordings of each arrangement.

This collection of fiddle tunes originally appeared in Kaufmans Collection of American Fiddle Tunes for Flatpicking Guitar. Steve Kaufman says he cant emphasize enough the importance of developing a large repertoire of tunes. Fiddle tunes give us melodies that eventually allow us to begin to improvise. Sometimes without even knowing it. The more tunes you know, the more melodies and intersecting melody lines you know. This allows you to eventually cut and paste portions of the melody line into another song. In the beginning you will probably unknowingly replace an ending run. These are the last two measures of the section of a tune. Many of them in the same key are interchangeable, unless they are specific to the melody of the song. After a while you will cut out measures in the middle of the song and then you will be able to take the snips of melodies and play them in another song in a different key thus beginning to improvise. All of this is possible because you built up your repertoire of tunes. Includes access to online audio.
