A number of sketches for this work were made in Greece in the summer of 1958. When the work was finished, I dedicated it to Benjamin Britten. In 1963, on the occasion of the 60th birthday of my old friend Josef Rufer, I added an epilogue in which I recapture the mood of the whole work and introduce a sort of quotation from Schonberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, as a greeting to Rufer who devoted his whole life to the Viennese master.- Hans Werner Henze.

The tragic circumstances surrounding the origin of the concerto are well known: Manon Gropius, the daughter of Berg's friend Alma Mahler, died of polio after the composer had written the first sketches to his violin concerto. In remembrance of her, he dedicated the work to the memory of an angel. Later, Berg decided to incorporate into the score the Bach chorale Es ist genug as a quote. He also worked on the solo part directly and intensely with the American violinist Louis Krasner, who had commissioned the work. Berg was no longer able to witness the first performance and the first edition of the concerto since he passed away in late 1935. This new edition is the first Urtext version of Berg's work, which was created in the midst of a spate of epoch-making violin concertos by Stravinsky (1931), Schoenberg (1936), Prokofiev (1937), Bartok (1938), Hindemith (1939) a. o. Errors from the first edition were corrected after an in-depth comparison with the autograph score, the short score and, in some cases, with the twelve-tone row structure. The entire performance material can be purchased; however, due to copyright reasons, the score and orchestral parts are not available the United States.Werden die Urtextausgaben von Breitkopf & Hartel aufgrund ihres hellblauen Umschlags augenzwinkernd die Himmlischen genannt, so ist dies in Bezug auf die neu vorgelegte Partitur Programm. Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radiobroadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. The playfully inventive cycle for voice, piano and string quartet, dedicated to his “dear wife” Martha, brings together short compositions written in 1937-40. “These are,” says Schmid, “12 small pieces in a wide variety of instrumentation and different forms - some of them twelve-tone pieces, some of them in a technique that comes close. An attempt to write music that is technically easier to perform.” The arch-like overall form combines folksong-like vocal numbers on text from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” with solo pieces, quartet movements and counterpoint art on the name of “BACH” and expresses Schmid's view of music in a subtly personal way.
