Commiss ioned by Choir & Organ Magazine for the Choir of Royal Holloway, Rupert Gough, conductor
Hymn to St. Cecilia is an English setting of the Latin prayer Cecilia virgo, whose melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic features are punctuated by singing that is sometimes accompanied by the organ and sometimes exposed in accappella sections. The crux of the piece occurs in the moment that describes how many look to St. Cecilia (i.e. music) “to transform the world’s mourning into the glory of Paradise.”

Performance Notes: The handbell arrangements in this collection have been composed for use specifically with the We Celebrate hymnal published by WLP. The hymn tunes used, as well as their harmonizations, are commonly found in same form in many hymnals. The bell peal is intended to be used as part of an introduction to the hymn. The pattern may be repeated as many times as necessary, and is to be followed by an organ/instrumental introduction that leads to the singing of the hymn. The peal could be rung from a stationary position, or could be a processional (movement) by a small group of ringers. For processionals, parts enter from lowest to highest, or in any preferred order. Each part may be repeated as needed before the next part enters. The final chord is rung together when the procession is completed.

The anthem is a wedding of the hymn, All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name, and a new setting of Caroline Noel's text and sets an austere, military mood through the use of repeated notes in the organ and proclamatory motifs in the trumpet obbligato. After an instrumental transition to the hymn tune CORONATION, the congregation joins the choir in singing five verses of the hymn, culminating in a majestic free harmonization in the final verse. Includes trumpet part.
