Composer's NoteThe study of the violin presents certain difficulties for beginners which are frequently the cause of a sudden abatement in the pupil's zeal and ambition even before he has mastered the first rudiments.The blame for this is commonly laid on the teacher who is called incapable or negligent; losing sight of the fact that the pupil began his studies without the slightest notion not merely of the difficulties to be encountered but also of the regular and assiduous industry indispensable for surmounting them. It is important therefore to smooth these first asperities by showing their utility and making them agreeable; to this end myViolin Method was published and the present Exercises have been written which latter may be considered as forming a supplement to the former. Originally composed for his own teaching purposes Wohlfahrt's set of studies has become a standard work forbeginning the Violin and are studied the world over. The set begins with simple first position techniques including single-note pedalling and double-stopping before advancing to higher positions in later exercises.Theseshort pieces represent excellent preparatory material for those intending to confront the Violin works of the German masters. Op 45-74-The second volume of Franz Wohlfahrt's Foundation Studies For The Violin contains 42 studies with modernized fingerings bowings and dynamics by world-famous violinist Rachel Barton Pine. At the same time this updated edition remains faithful to the original maintaining the same pedagogical sequence as Aiqouni’s classic edition. This edition includes a DVD of Rachel Barton Pine playing all 42 etudes with two camera views so students can choose to see either the bow or the left hand technique. The disc also contains MP3 audio tracks.

The present edition Op. 45 comprising 60 studies is of great didactic value already tried out by several generations of teacher-musicians. Owing to their tunefulness they are also enjoyed by students. While Wohlfahrt and other representatives of the older Violin school used the traditional order of teaching passing from 1st position to 3rd and leaving out 2nd which was probably considered more difficult the steady and successive teaching of all the positions has been thought advisable in the present edition of the studies. Thus after the 1st position the 2nd was introduced choosing those studies from the present opus number in which the fingering exclusively in thisposition was used.
