This collection of 10 Polish Folk Songs on Soldier Themes by Witold Lutoslawski, originally intended for male choir a cappella, was written in 1951. The score was published that same year by the Ministry of Defence Publishers in the series Biblioteka Muzyczna DomuWojska Polskiego no. 31. Some of the songs (numbers 4, 5, 6) were also published by PWM Edition in Krakow (1945) in the collection Pod jaworem (Under the Sycamore Tree) - a selection of Polish folk songs arranged for male choir a cappella, edited by Jozef K. Lasocki. 10 Polish Folk Songs... together with the 1951 cycle of four songs (Wyszlabym ja, Sluzba Polsce, Zelazny marsz and Naprzod idziemy) and the nine-bar Lord Tennyson Song written many years later (as an occasional gift for Robin Boyle) are the only songs written for a cappella choir by Witold Lutoslawski. Numerous questions from famous choral conductors from home and abroad persuaded me to undertake to make this edition of 10 Polish Folk Songs... for mixed choir a cappella. As a part of the collection of love songs for the prizewinning LIEDERPROJEKT, several new arrangements have been created for soprano and string quartet that can be heard on the two Liebeslieder CDs (83.028 and 83.029). The arrangements are by Andreas N. Tarkmann, emeritus professor for instrumentation and arrangement at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts. Four English songs make up the main part of the collection: Purcell's If music be the food of love and Morely's It was a lover and his lass as well as the two folk melodies Down by the Salley gardens and Greensleeves. In contrast, the painfully beautiful Finnish folk song Kukkuu and the slow pavane Belle qui tien ma vie, from the pen of Thoinot Arbeau, are included. It is a coronation for all musically oriented wedding feasts! Score available separately - see item CA.240800.

A truly masterful fantasy on an English folk song, this piece shows the exceptional musical development found in many of the greatest classical symphonies. The fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo (ABACA) and features fine counterpoint and engaging melodies. This piece can be played in an orchestral and quartet setting and is both challenging and fun to play.My Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of Fife was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Life being what is it, she eventually gave up the violin and chose a completely different career for herself-though we are still the best of friends! I found the song in a collection of folk songs for children where it is called Rissoldy Rossoldy. Except for a few notes, the song was almost identical to the English folksong The Wee Cooper of Fife, which begins: There was a Wee Cooper named Fife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / He took him to wed a gentle wife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / She would na card she would na spin / for fear 't would harm her gentle skin.... The tune is rollicking and words are amusing, and yes, eventually they worked out their problems! The Fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo, which is ABACA coda, such as one finds in the last movements of some of Haydn's later symphonies. This composition may be performed by a string orchestra or solo string quartet. - Douglas Townsend.MyA Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of FifeA was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. This is a one-of-a-kind collection, based on research and interviews of people who actually performed and attended play parties as children. The fourth volume of the Lieder und Chorwerke (Songs and Choral Works) from the Reger Hybrid Edition of Works (RWA) presents songs Max Reger composed between November 1903 and July 1905. In his Opus 75 songs, Reger set verses by classic German poets, such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as folksong texts in his usual avant-garde manner. In the 30 songs from the first two collections of the Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, on the other hand, the composer distanced himself from his previous approach to songwriting by adopting a simpler, folk-like style. The popular Schlichte Weisen were also a concession to his publishers' wishes. The songs in Opus 88 were published not by Lauterbach & Kuhn but by Simrock, a firm more willing to accept music that departed from Alltagsgeschmack (everyday or popular taste). The four songs were dedicated to the mezzo-soprano Lula Mysz-Gmeiner.In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA), supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. As a Hybrid Edition, it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques. The digital offer belonging to the volume is published in an online portal.Contents:< CR>Eighteen Songs op. 75Schlichte Weisen op. 76, vol. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey & Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. Although Bartók had already completed his revision by the end of 1943, the revised edition was only issued in 1946. The pieces were published without titles in the first edition, but the folksong lyrics were included. These lyrics, deemed unnecessary for the non-Hungarian audiences, were not taken over to the American revised edition however, a significant number of pieces were provided with a title conveying their mood and their background in folk music and folk life. The American edition omitted the folk songs lyrics that seemed unnecessary to the audience there, but the titles of the first edition were replaced with English titles (some with the same meaning and some with modified interpretations) conveying each song's mood and background in folk music and folk life. The present edition - which contains the same scores as those in Volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) - is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ''corrected''. We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. This publication contains a preface and editorial comments in both Hungarian and English.
