In the period around 1700, numerous settings of the Magnificat were performed in the main Leipzig churches. Works by composers such as J. Kuhnau and G. P. Telemann survive; however, the best-known examples are undoubtedly the Magnificat BWV 243 and 243a by J. S. Bach, the 'extra' movements for the latter which exist in Bach's own hand. Following a long-established Leipzig tradition, the vocal settings of Vom Himmel hoch, Freut euch und jubiliert, Gloria in excelsis and Virga Jesse floruit (known as the Kindl-Wiegen) could be inserted between the verses of the Magnificat at Christmas. Some of these are scored for festive forces. These extra movements in C major published here for the first time, and attributed to Johann Schelle, can be performed either together with a Magnificat setting in a suitable key (e.g. by Kuhnau, Telemann) or independently.

As one of the three canticles from the New Testament, the Magnificat - the Canticle of Mary - has at all times held a prominent position in church music. Telemann's setting of Luther's German translation of the text bears eloquent witness both to the composer's rich imagination and to his ability to mold a variety of musical shapes into a coherent formal Baroque architecture. Four solo movements with colorfully contrasting instrumentation are juxtaposed with four emphatically homogeneous choral movements; all of the latter are in 6/8 meter and in motet setting with instruments doubling colla parte. Particularly the choral movements are characterized by lively text portrayal and a wealth of at times dramatic imagery. A work of exceptional magnetism for both listeners and choir singers! Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3124300.

Thi s six-movement chorale cantata was first performed on 26 December 1724. The text is based on the Lutheran translation of the early Christian hymn A solis ortus cardinem. The outer movements frame two arias for tenor and bass, and two secco recitatives for alto and soprano. The first and sixth movements are in old-fashioned style, with four-part vocal writing and colla parte instruments. In the aria (movement 2) the tenor is accompanied by an obbligato oboe d'amore, and in the 4th and most striking movement, the three string parts accompany the bass. The demands on the singers, instrumentalists, and chorus are typical of a Bach cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3112100.
