Buckeye Rondo was commissioned by the Ohio State University for their annual middle school honor band festival. Composer Larry Clark used this opportunity to write a piece in a rondo form, but with some modern twists. The main theme is very catchy, and is used in various harmonic treatments and style. The episodes of the rondo as is common, increase in length and diversity as the piece develops. The world premiere of Jan Müller-Wieland's “Rondo” for viola and violoncello was given at a night concert on 8 February 2014 during the course of the Hindemith Festival of the University of the Arts in Berlin. The performers were the violist Hartmut Rohde and the cellist Jens-Peter Maintz. Hartmut Rohde asked four composer friends, amongst them Jan Müller-Wieland, to contribute a brief duo including the viola inspired by Hindemith's Duet for viola and violoncello composed in 1934. Müller-Wieland decided on the original instrumentation of the Hindemith Duet and has dedicated his Rondo to the soloists of the world premiere.
