A key figure in the so-called English Musical Renaissance, Parry was a considerable composer of chamber music. His three violin sonatas, the first of which, in d minor, is here published for the first time, along with the Fantasie-sonata and Sonata in D major, date from the 1870s and 80s, and are contemporary with his four symphonies and setting of Milton's Blest Pair of Sirens. They are fine additions to the string repertoire and will be greeted enthusiastically by violinists seeking new material for recitals. Performing editions of each sonata are available separately.

(Thomas Enselein).

The three piano sonatas by Joachim Raff (1822-1882), representing his three main creative phases, occupy a special position among his more than 100 piano pieces. They reflect a significant compositional aspiration whereas Raff otherwise frequently leans towards the salon-music genre in his piano music. Raff composed the early sonata op. 14 in 1844 after his first works were positively evaluated and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy had encouraged him to venture a career as a composer. The Fantasie-Sonate [Fantasy Sonata] in d minor op. 168, Raff wrote in 1871 at the height of his fame as one of Germany's then most-played composers. Its dedication to Camille Saint-Saens shows his opposition to the rampant German disapproval of France and its music representatives in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. The second version of the sonata op. 14, composed in the fall of 1881, had only the opus number in common with the earlier version. In this late work Raff had created an entirely new sonata. ,,Beautifully presented on cream paper, with exceptional clarity and generous spacing. The Fantasie-Sonate in D minor Op. 168, in particular, is a masterpiece which manifests both considerable power and exquisite craftsmanship. (www.pianodao.com).

With the 2nd Organ Sonata in A flat major of 1871, we encounter a masterpiece which is already fully formed. The first movement, only loosely related to sonata form in the sense of the title Fantasie-Sonate, the atmospheric Adagio espressivo, and the grand finale movement with its fugue and references back to the first movement ensure great success for the grand romantic organ sonata, in spite of its technical demands.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger dedicated his 9th Organ Sonata (composed in May 1885) to Alexandre Guilmant, the indefatigable concertizing virtuoso who had already given the first Paris performance of Rheinberger's 1st Organ Concerto (in F major, op. 137). With opulent harmonies, conspicuously frequent tempo changes, and chords which are a true delight when played on a Cavaille-Coll organ, the rhapsodic Fantasie at the beginning of the 3rd movement certainly lives up to its name. The separate edition is taken from the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers.______________ _________________________ Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. As Ruth Crawford's work is filled with the pungent echoes of the half-step and its partner, the major seventh, Ingolf Dahl turns naturally to the modal flavor of the whole-step and minor seventh. This huge work, a 20th-century classic,is in four movements: the first is an exciting sonata-allegro exposition marked Allegro energico, which is followed by two interior fantasies on the openning theme of the sonata-allegro movement, and is copped by a lyrical Adogio cantabile e Coda, which gently concludes the work with tender reflecitions of the cantabile second theme of the first movement. 1981 piano competition, studios, colleges, libraries, professional. Difficult theme of the first movement. 1981 piano competition, studios, colleges, libraries, professional. Difficult.

An enchanting splendour characterises Áskell Masson’s work Fantasiestück, combined with considerable emotional depth in the treatment of the piano, which at times somehow reminded the reviewer of Beethoven’s very last piano sonatas, although of course the musical language is different. There is just so much massive power in this work. One other thing made the music very impressive: the brilliant use of the upper range of the instrument.
