Wayne Wold wrote the poetry of this dramatic and stirring anthem while visiting the Holy Land and musically captures all the emotion of the Passion story with intense and colorful text painting. Written in four sections that reflect on Jerusalem, Gethsemane, the upper room, and Golgotha, each section concludes with the refrain, O Jerusalem . . . While the score is more advanced with dissonant and chromatic writing, the reoccurring motifs and refrains will aid the learning process. Consider singing each section as a response to the corresponding Bible verses as the Passion narrative is read. _x000D_.

Žibuoklė Martinaitytė tells about the background of Aletheia (2022) for mixed choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB): Aletheia is variously translated from Greek as unconcealedness, revealing or unclosedness. It is uncovering of the Truth - the one we are afraid to face, the truth that can only be expressed directly through the pre-verbal communication. How do you find words for the horrors of the war, for all unimaginable global atrocities? How do you even allow yourself to feel it out? Solely through art, through music that offer a safe space and a formalized framework for processing these accumulated complex emotions and sharing them with others in a moment. This piece has no verbal text and it is based on various combinations of vowels and consonants, thus connecting us on a deeper level through the immediate emotional experience. The war in Ukraine in spring of 2022 had an impact on all of us and shattered my deeply rooted Lithuanian identity. When the freedom is threatened and innocent people are dying, it is hard to make sense out of the reality. Yet there is poetry even in the worst nightmares. I was imagining that the only instrument people have even in situations of destruction, in the midst of the war, is their VOICE. It brought back memories of my youth when Singing revolution was taking place in the Baltic countries. Human voice was the only weapon that people used to express their determination for freedom and independence. Voice is our first and the very last instrument we have in our lifetime. Thinking in these terms brings almost a sacred dimension to the voice as an expression of the life itself - from the very first baby's scream until the last breath and whisper.Duration c. 15'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

The text Can Love Be Found in a Manger? was inspired by the four candles of the Advent Wreath which symbolically represent: hope, peace, joy, and love. Can we still find these emotions in an event of long ago? Yes! We find them in the manger, in a star’s bright light, in a baby’s first cry, and even “tonight” as we both sing and reflect. The questions asked by the text give an opportunity for the choir to sing beautifully arched phrases with the emphasis on the word found. Do not be reluctant to bring down the dynamics at the end of these phrases. It will be important for the singers to carefully follow the dynamic indications throughout the piece. Be especially careful of intonation and balance in measures 54-56. In measures 87-90, avoid singing the Stille Nacht fragment too loudly. In the last two measures, sopranos, tenors, and basses should yield to the altos as they move up on the final “tonight.”When sung with sensitivity and thoughtfulness, it is the composer’s wish that hope, peace, joy and love be found by singers and listeners.

Everyone Sang was written for a wedding blessing at Wells Cathedral on 26th May 2007. The choir on that occasion featured many singers from the operatic world and this, combined with the emotional nature of the occasion, explains something of its ecstatic style. The poem is truly beautiful and offers much opportunity for word-setting. Opening in unison, the musical material follows the wonderful images of the poem leading to a shattering climax for everyone's voice was suddenly lifted. A warm chord emerges for the setting sun before the mood darkens slightly for the following lines before the final pages of profound peace; the singing will never be done is repeated until almost inaudible and finally left hanging in space. An excellent addition to the remembrance and war commemoration repertoire for use in concert hall or church, especially during the centenary commemorations of the First World War.

How many times I have overheard a colleague say, ‘I could create a performance like that if I had those voices.’ Maybe so, but here is a book that will help you build healthy technique and ravishing tone that is responsive to the emotional content of the words being sung. —Ann Howard Jones, from the Foreword How do text and music intertwine to build true artistry in choral performance? In Becoming the Choral Poet, esteemed conductor and teacher Jerry McCoy shares how choral conductors can guide their ensembles to deeper artistic expression through an understanding of and commitment to the poetic expression and emotional content of the words they sing. McCoy shows how the poetic elements of a text—punctuation, assonance, onomatopoeia, mood, inflection—inform a host of musical decisions, including dynamics, phrasing, tempo, and color. He follows with guidance for developing an interpretative analysis of a work, using beautiful literature as examples. Central to the book is a chapter on the choral poet’s “mechanics,” or their attributes, skills, and procedures. McCoy addresses a range of topics: Personal and professional characteristics of conductors Auditions Rhythmic integrity Creative seating charts and their uses Rehearsal considerations Characteristics of powerful programming Conducting gestures to build vocal color and expressive shapes Exercises to refine tuning and rhythmic skills The book’s final chapter presents a collection of short essays from throughout McCoy’s career that aim to strengthen the conductor’s educational approaches, enhance choral performance, and broaden the cultural balance in today’s singing. Becoming the Choral Poet is the culmination of a life’s work in the choral arts. For novice and seasoned conductors alike, this book builds the conductor’s imagination, allowing them to paint with the brush of their singers in rehearsals and concerts that are vocally, artistically, and creatively inspired. Dr. Jerry McCoy is Regents Professor of Music Emeritus for the University of North Texas (UNT), where from 2000–2015 he led the choral program to national and international acclaim while serving as Director of Choral Studies and Conductor of the A Cappella Choir.
