Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was a celebrated figure in the European music scene in his own lifetime. Warmly welcomed and recommended by Liszt and highly esteemed by Brahms and Tchaikovsky, he took the concert halls by storm with his compositions, influenced by the late-Romantic spirit and advancing as far as musical Impressionism, such the Piano Concerto, the music of Ibsen's Peer Gynt and numerous songs. His Lyrical Pieces delighted all piano-playing music lovers.Grieg had studied at the Leipzig Conservatoire and once called himself 'musically speaking, entirely German'. After his return to his home country, he listened with rapt attention to the songs and dances of the Norwegian farmers and developed his characteristic style on the basis of this music. To him, that was not only a musical, but also a political issue. Grieg, a master of poetry in music, was both an active democrat and a patriot, his ideals being justice and humanity.

The decisive role that Norwegian folk music played for Edvard Grieg can be felt in almost all of his works. For his Norwegian Dancesop. 35, presented here in an Urtext edition, Grieg took old folk tunes from a collection published by the musician and researcher Ludvig Mathias Lindeman and arranged them for piano four hands in 1880. A few years later, Grieg also made the two-hand version presented here. For this Henle Urtext edition, all the extant autographs in the Grieg Archive in Bergen, Norway were consulted alongwith the contemporary first editions. The co-editor here is the Norwegian pianist and Grieg specialist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, who is also responsible for the fingerings.

The famous set of dances by Norway's greatest composer were written for piano duet. Grieg later created a piano solo version, but refused to orchestrate the set. After some study of Grieg and his music, Michael Webster has arranged the four dances for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano in a faithful setting, using the piano duet version as a guide. This lively Grieg classic will be a welcome new addition to performance programs. For advanced performers.______________ _________________________ Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, MICHAEL WEBSTER made his New York recital debut at Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist.
