'Verse 1' marks the beginning of a more ambitious and intense style of composition. The ideas are relatively simple and develop gradually in a cyclic fashion within a one movement sectional design. Progressively faster tempi leadto the main climax of the work near the end of the piece. Then a short coda leads to a very quiet ending and a return to the original tonal centre of C.Quoting composer:'In April 1975 I occupied a flat in Aldeburgh Suffolk near the seafront. As a member of the English Chamber Orchestra I had come to work for a week on a recording of Britten’s opera ‘Death in Venice’ so the real and suggested sound of the sea was in my ears so to speak for dayson end. A few weeks later when I started work on 'Verse 1' it became clear in the first few bars that I was recalling and suggesting the sea and the beach at Aldeburgh. I am not aware of any direct influence from Britten’smusic but I do however quote a small fragment from a theme to be found in a piano quartet by Mahler played early in the piece by the flute (bars 6 & 7).This work was awarded the First Prize in the Viotti InternationalCompetition for composers in Italy in 1975.

Phantasmagoria for Violin Violoncello and Piano was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2007. First performance by Trio con Brio 12 Aug 2007 in Roskilde Denmark.Programme note:My Piano Trio “Phantasmagoria” is in five movements. It all began with the fifth movement which originally was a tiny piece for cello and piano. After re-composing this little piece for piano trio I worked composed backwards – The fourth movement – third movement - and I finally got to the beginning of the piece. It all begins with the violin – solo – heavily muted but aggressive and gradually the cello andthe piano enter as shadows of the violin. The first movement ends in a dark shadow of an aria from my opera “Under the Sky”. All five movements are full of shadows of all kinds. Shadows of fragments and traces of movements appear in other movements. Music voices instruments appear behind each other as a play of shadows. “Shadow play” was the first title on my mind but a shadow play can be more physical – the shadow can come alive – alive behind the shadows. Phantasmagoria is a shadow play in darkness where contours of persons and music voices and instruments - create adventures behind each other. “Phantasmagoria” was commissioned by Franz Schubert Society Denmark and dedicated to Trio con Brio Copenhagen. Par IGUDESMAN ALEKSEY. “This flute quartet is filled with pictures out of my own mind. The idea is to walk through a fictional gallery that exists exclusively in my head. The pictures one sees are moods, feelings and the inner secrets of a person. After one round, one returns to the beginning of the inner gallery and starts walking faster. The musical material repeats in a more compact way, where smaller fragments are seen or “felt”. The next round is even faster and so on, culminating in a frantic run through the imaginary gallery. The work culminates in a slow pensive reflective section, a type of emotional exhaustion, followed by a last furious sprint towards the end of the confusing and contradicting pictures in the gallery of my mind.” Aleksey Igudesman – 2017/ Recueil / Flûte Traversière, Violon, Alto et Violoncelle ou

C-Dur. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart’s 'Adagio in C major' for English horn, 2 violins and violoncello KV 580a has survived as a fragment but based on a comparison of analogous passages the editor, Helmut Renz, was able to complete the movement. In the Carus edition an arrangement by an unknown author from before 1900 for oboe and string quartet has also been included.
