As the title suggests, the lyrical thematic material effortlessly dovetails from one section of the piece to the other. The melodic material is lush and flowing while the pizzicato accompaniment gives the contrast and forward momentum that makes this work feel so right. Wonderful writing from composer Tyler Arcari.

Choral singing, together with organ music, was considered in the 18th and 19th centuries the church-music form of expression per se. So, choral singing and choral music played a dominant role in the 19th century for the Bach revival. Though in many places the political and social upheavals of the Napoleonic era brought some traditional musical institutions to an end, the St. Thomas School with its music boarding school at Leipzig was able to hold its ground and - thanks to a lengthy reorganizational process - dovetail with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which had in turn arisen from a middle-class society. For the 800th anniversary in 2012 of the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir, a symposium was devoted to the institutional and musical transformation of choral traditions during this time period. The volume presents the results of this conference in an expanded and revised form: Examined from various perspectives are performance-practice aspects, such as the instruments available, the age at which the voice breaks, or the changes in vocal style, and discussed are institutional questions such as the conducting by prefects, the autonomous self-education, or the St. Thomas students' choice of repertoire.Instit utionen, Klangideale und Repertoires im Umbruch.

Brown Shuffle was first recorded by Norway's Oslo Groove Company on their jaw-dropping album Anno 1990. Now, for the first time, this newly-engraved edition is available in the United States. Lars Erik Gudim's excellent scoring brings the full ensemble together with dovetailed flourishes and a hard 12/8 groove built from interlocking rhythms across the band. This fusion/shuffle chart features primary sections in 12/8, 15/8 and 9/8 with interspersed sections of straight-ahead swing in 4/4. Alto sax 1 doubles on soprano and flute, alto 2 doubles on flute, and trumpets 1 and 2 double on flugelhorns. The solos are scored for trumpet 2 and trombone 2 and can optionally be opened up for more. A wonderful chart for advanced groups!

This colorful, medium up-tempo Latin piece includes interesting harmonic and melodic twists. Suitable for medium to professional level players, the solo changes will be challenging for improvisers. Melodic dovetailing, polytonality and unconventional phrasing techniques are highlights.

This uplifting prayer for peace is an anthem setting of Thomas Cranmer's Collect for the Second Sunday after Epiphany. And perhaps in the spirit of the day's epistle - an exhortation from Romans 12 to practise those gifts received through grace - the composer offers here a beautiful account of his choral idiom: a matter of precisely imagined textures, as sensitive to individual line and contour as to the seamless dovetailing of motifs and harmony, and of majestic, purposefully cadenced phrases in affective unity with the sense and breathing of the text. Written for the 2011 Liturgical Music Course and premiered in Winchester Cathedral, Almighty and Everlasting God is well within the standard of capable church choirs, and offers an absorbing and memorable enhancement of reverence in worship for a variety of occasions.

Stream for Clarinet and String Quartet (2015) was commissioned by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society in celebration of its 30th Anniversary Season, through support of The William Penn Foundation. The first performance was in April 2016 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Notes from the composer: The 'line' in Stream is often threaded together into a chain made up of separate 'points' played by the strings, and sometimes by the string and the clarinet. An analogy might be that each instrument, at times, produces a single 'ray of light' from within the larger light source. Moreover, there are many passages where the intended effect is that of the strings providing a 'halo' surrounding the solo clarinet. Similarly, the clarinet often dovetails with, as well as emerges or submerges in and out of, a strand in the string music..What's in a name? In my titles, I generally aim to capture something that I believe to be essential about the particular work. At some level this is to offer an entry-point for the listener, a glimpse of the composition in its totality. STREAM as a title came to be when much of the music was already fully composed, and it encapsulates much of what I wish to say in words about this work: it suggests flow - whether gentle or forceful; it implies a journey, one that could take us onto unexpected terrains yet is always moving forward; embedded into this word is also the idea of stream of consciousness, and with it, free association and unexpected twists of fancy. Approximately 16 minutes in duration, STREAM is to be played without a break, yet there are strong elements of a three-movement structure here. An expository quasi-first-movement lays out important materials of varying character; the middle part, suggesting contrast and repose, is initially slow and reflective, but then embarks on new explorations of the notion of stasis, while the final movement is dominated by fast-moving music of high energy that consolidates the previous materials. Important throughout is the way in which seemingly transitional stretches of music emerge and propel the music onward in ways that are at once unexpected and fantastical. A composer's statement about this work would not be complete without acknowledging the degree to which the work was inspired by the awareness that it was being created for a quintet of extraordinary performers of the most beautiful and flowing musicianship - clarinet virtuoso Anthony McGill and the intrepid Brentano Quartet.
