Add sparkle to your Advent prayer celebrations with this contemporary arrangement of conditor alme siderum. The sixteenth-note apreggios in the accompaniment create a sense of fervent expectation in contrast to the gentle legato phrasing of the vocal line. The intensity quietly builds evenly throughout until the piano dramatically breaks in verse 3. The accompaniment returns in force for the final phrase, “Praise, honor, might, and glory be from age to age eternally.”.

A delightful arrangement of a classic Advent text from the 9th-century, this gently flowing piece begins with a statement of the melody coupled by a simple arpeggiated accompaniment. The undulating rhythm is broken mid-piece by a more chordal harmonic movement that reflects the reverence and magnitude of the text, “At your great name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow.” It ends as it began with a strong restatement of the opening accompaniment.

Kathleen Demny, inspired by Carol Browning’s arrangement of the hymn tune CONDITOR ALME SIDERUM (“Creator of the Stars of Night”), has further adapted and arranged the tune as the basis for Missa de Lumine. The Browning arrangement appears in several GIA hymnals, making the Demny setting the perfect addition to Advent celebrations.
