Tombeau which takes its title from the central elegy of the work was composed 1966-69. Its form is a series of fairly specific technical studies interspersed with variations. The introduction provides a sort of ‘trailer’, in which each phrase of the theme is punctuated by a brief quote from the ensuing studies (heard in reverse order). This scheme is balanced by that of the finale, which is also punctuated by short ‘flashbacks’ . Tombeau was written as a tribute to certain composers for the piano, notably Schumann and Szymanovsky, and to a style of playing that has now become almost ‘historic’. It is also a tribute to our beloved masters, many of them obscure, who made usmusicians. It is therefore, in many senses, a retrospective work, the last of a phase, undertaken just before a fairly drastic re-evaluation of techniques, ideas, and intentions. It is dedicated to Stephen Kovacevich, who commissioned it and gave its first performance on the BBC Third Programme and subsequently at Dartington Hall Summer School.

Power ful anthem From the early moments of discouragement as the women approached the tomb on Easter morning, to their awareness of Christ's resurrection, and even the reference in verse three of our future resurrection, this powerful anthem reminds us that the tomb is empty! Jesus lives.

“Fren ch composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Mireille's Tomb in 1959. As with his other compositions, Mireille's Tomb for Galoubet (Pipe), Piccolo or Oboe, with Tambourine, Toneless Snare Drum or Piano was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. Mireille's Tomb is a highly unusual and modern work, not only in instrumentation, but in its use of varying time signatures, complex rhythms and a range of performance directions. The composition exploits tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However, this Tomasi piece, suitable for advanced instrumentalists, provides an exciting, alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.&rdquo.

Come and See is an invitation for each of us to experience Jesus as He enters Jerusalem; to witness His betrayal by a friend; to endure with Him the suffering and death of a sinless Savior; and finally to behold His empty tomb. Through the eyes of a blind beggar, we're taken through these events and more by way of a powerful and moving dramatic script, and energetic choral arrangements carefully designed for smaller choirs by two-time Dove Award winning writers, Dennis and Nan Allen. With a run time of 36 minutes, this dramatic musical includes popular worship songs Come and See and Sing to the King and the classic Wayne Watson song Friend of a Wounded Heart. Also included is a beautiful arrangement of the hymn I Saw the Cross and a new tune to the great hymn text Beneath the Cross of Jesus. Musically, this work is highlighted by settings that any choir can comfortably attain. Several opportunities for congregational involvement are included. For the full drama version, a small cast is required, and Nan Allen has written creative and very useful production notes to assist in both staging and costuming. The narrator version requires two narrators and is equally moving. This Easter, come and see what Jesus did for you.

Uniqu e in concept, soaring in spirit, and with music, text, and narration by Pepper Choplin, “Come Touch the Robe†allows us to encounter the Christ of healing, glory, authority, humility, and victory. This work uses the simple garment that Jesus wore as a thematic device to recount the interaction of those who were with Him during His last days on Earth. To a suffering woman, His robe conveyed divine healing. On the mountaintop, the robe shone and filled the disciples’ eyes with His glory and authority. When Jesus laid His garment aside in the upper room, it displayed His humility as a servant. At the tomb, the grave clothes He left behind help us experience His resurrection and the victory over death. It is through these personal, touching moments that our hearts are fully prepared to meet Jesus in an intimate way, allowing us to experience the healing, the glory, and the power of Christ, and rejoice in the stirring celebration of the resurrection of the Lamb of God.

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.
