Just as Serge Rachmaninoff's piano virtuosity ranked him among the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, his compositions for piano and orchestra won him an important position among modern composers. Among the works that ensure his reputation are the first three piano concertos, reprinted here from the authoritative full-score Russian editions.
Rachmaninoff wrote the stirring Piano Concerto No. 1 in the years 1890–91, while he was still a young student at the Moscow Conservatory, and revised it nearly three decades later in 1917, when he began to devote his life mainly to his international career as a piano virtuoso. The immense and enduring success of the Piano Concerto No. 2, completed in 1901, has made this romantic work one of the most performed and recorded in the concerto literature and one of the most familiar compositions in all of music. The powerful and expressive Piano Concerto No. 3 was composed for a concert tour of America, during which Rachmaninoff appeared with great success as composer, pianist, and conductor. Like the first two concertos, it remains a repertoire favorite in concert halls around the world.
All three acclaimed works are reprinted in this finely made yet remarkably inexpensive Dover edition. Musicians and music lovers will find it a convenient single-volume source from which to study intimately three major works of the twentieth century.

Charleston Harbor Celebration was commissioned by the Charleston Community Band of Charleston South Carolina (Stephen B. Giove Conductor). The band commissioned the piece to honor its past conductors -- Earl R. Mays Edwin S. Toporek Herbert L. Day and John R. Spitler -- for their faithful service to education music and musicians. The piece itself is a concert overture that captures the beauty and energy of Charleston's important and historic harbor.

This piece was commissioned by a brass band from the Jura in Switzerland to thank its resigning conductor for his loyalty and work. The first and last sections of this composition develop a joyful and highly energetic theme which expresses the complete commitment required of a conductor in order to get the best out of the musicians. The central passage mirrors an atmosphere full of nostalgia. After so many years of intense and relentless work it is always difficult for a keen conductor to retire.

The work-group “animatie” took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion. Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. Some Reasons For Hesitating (1999) for Ensemble by Juliana Hodkinsons. Some reasons for hesitating was written for Nouvel Ensemble Moderne Montréal. First performance: Adelaide Festival of the Arts March 2000. Programme note: The piece is held together not by the grid of vertical time-coordination (a common metre common barlines) nor with the aid of a conductor but by a network of interdependent local cues such that the elements of each musician’s part – fragmented and incoherent as they are in isolation – serve by design as points of departure for the other musicians’parts. So the organising coherence of the whole is cut up into seemingly inert formless elements containing on their own little information or meaning but gaining sense once put together. The lack of a common framework to hold the sounds and silences results in a particular kind of waiting in which the silent musician is involved in the possibility that the end of that waiting may come a little unpredictably or unexpectedly. One benefit of this kind of communication between musicians is an increased intensity of pauses and waiting; one risk is the danger of missing a cue altogether. These phenomena are welcome as audible signs that (the) performance is a creative act relating hearing and action in a fragile process which requires constant adjustments and readjustments. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. A spectacular dive via an extended chromatic scale immediately submerges us in a charged and somewhat archaic-feeling atmosphere. Trumpets, horns and trombones resound in rhythmic patterns, buttressed by restless motifs in the percussion. A second theme, in the woodwinds, begins much calmer but is quickly pushed aside by that same brass offensive. This introduction is the musical expression of the sometimes tumultuous early history of the town of Peer in Belgium. It closes with a D scale played over two octaves and repeated three times, symbolizing the church steeples that dominate the townscape. Peer has the credentials of a town, and people should know about it. There followsa rhythmic, turbulent passage: in the course of history, Peer has not been spared the ravages of war, arson, occupation, epidemic and other evils. In contrast, a slow, pastoral, lyrical part expresses the periods of peace and prosperity the town has known, as well as the serene geographic setting that still characterizes the place. Various instruments in groups are developed in solo style while the accompaniment displays vast, painterly images of sound. Now and then an exotic intonation is heard: a variety of peoples and cultures have left their mark on the town. This episode of tranquility and peacefulness comes to a sudden end when, via a surprising, almost chaotic transitional passage, we are in effect transported back to our own time. A hopeful, festive march expresses the confidence in the future that the Royal Concert Band of Peer exudes. This confidence is wholly justified: under the direction of conductor Willy Fransen, the 95 members of the concert band have experienced an extended period of good fortune, and the 75 musicians of the youth band - and the 45 little musicians of the mini-band - are involved in thriving operations. / Niveau : 6 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band

Composer and conductor Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) was a pupil of Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud at the Conservatoire de Paris, and received the first Prix de Rome in 1934. It was during his stay the Villa Medici that he wrote his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano - an adaptation of the third movement of Johan Sebastian Bach's Organ Pastorale in F Major BWV 590, which was to tour the world. This nostalgia-imbued melody, which expands over a regular meter, has, in turn, been the subject of numerous transcriptions, first for clarinet, then for Violin (or Flute) and Piano.
