For flute (piccolo), clarinet (B flat/C), glass harmonica, xylophone, piano I, piano II, violin I, violin II, viola, violoncello, double bass Written in March 1886 as a humorous occasional work for the traditional carnival concert organized by his cellist friend Charles-Joseph Lebouc, the Carnival of the Animals was so successful that Saint-Saëns banned performances and publication soon afterwards. He was worried that this “grand zoological fantasy†– consisting of 14 short individual pieces for eleven instruments – might overshadow his serious works. Yet only five months after the composer's death, it appeared in print after all, beginning its worldwide victory march – in its original setting as well as in numerous arrangements. Thus, the Carnival did in fact arguably become the most popular work by this French composer and, owing to its musical originality, it is also a favourite in music lessons or for school orchestra performances. With this combination of a study edition and an edition in parts (for which additional parts for larger numbers of strings may be ordered), G. Henle Publishers now presents the perfect resource for such occasions.

Fossils and Finale combines two of the better-known movements from the humorous Carnival of the Animals. This fourteen-movement suite by Camille Saint-Saëns featured musical depictions of animals such as The Swan and The Elephant, and was written for a private performance with young students in mind. While the composer didn't feel it was serious enough to be performed during his lifetime, it has since gone on to become a beloved classical-musical favorite. In this arrangement, the quirky Fossils with optional xylophone is written to be more accessible for intermediate students, segueing seamlessly into the circus-like Finale. Both movements feature bright, fun melodies within playable ranges and keys for the developing ensemble and the original piano part integrated into the string parts.

Maelstrom is a term synonymous with a whirlpool: a swirling, tumultuous vortex that engulfs everything around it. This exciting piece starts with a treacherous storm motif that acts as the undercurrent as quotes from famous water-themed compositions are heard. Some shifting is required in first violin, cello, and bass, and all parts include accidentals and dramatic dynamic changes. Students will learn the flowing theme from Smetana's Die Moldau, explore the haunting Aquarium movement from Saint-Saens's Carnival of the Animals, and bow along to a traditional Irish Sea Chanty, as melodies overlap in this musical storm. Developing players will refine articulation skills, explore a variety of rhythms in 6/8, and expand their chromatic and dynamic horizons in the familiar key of E minor.Maelstrom is a term synonymous with a whirlpool: a swirling, tumultuous vortex that engulfs everything around it. Conversat ional Solfege is a dynamic and captivating first-through-eighth grade general music program that enables students to become independent musical thinkers with the help of a rich variety of folk and classical music. It is organized around increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic content. Each new rhythmic or melodic element is discovered first in patterns and then reinforced with folk songs, rhymes, and classical examples. Central to the Conversational Solfege program is the use of music harvested from our rich and diverse American musical history. This variety of music serves as a common thread that spans and bonds generations. Each book contains varied song material so the teacher can select appropriate music for the lower grades or older beginners. This 12-step teaching method carefully brings students from readiness to, ultimately, creating music through inner hearing and then transferring their musical thoughts into notation—in other words, to compose music! This CD provides 14 classical selections referenced in Conversational Solfege Level 2. These examples provide reinforcement for emerging literacy skills, and they also enable students to listen to wonderful classical examples with greater attention. Listening to classical music can be challenging for elementary students. With nothing to hang onto, the many notes can be too much to comprehend and attention soon wanes. But with minimal literacy skills, students will have enough musical information to discover that classical music can be accessible and appealing. In the included booklet, timings are given for each selection and the portions of the music that are readable by the students are reproduced. Whether using this CD with Conversational Solfege instructional materials or simply as a resource of classical music with simple to read rhythmic and melodic material, both teachers and students will delight in discovering this wonderful music through literacy. This series is a complete, innovative approach to teaching music that will stay fresh year after year. CONTENTS Conversational Solfege Unit 5: 1. Saint-Sa ëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem “Danse macabre†reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt’s “Totentanzâ€.< br>“Danse macabre†is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received; in fact it was booed, possibly due to the “diabolic†solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in “The Carnival of the Animalsâ€. Since the composer’s death, “Danse macabre†is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult.
