A Journey Through 300 Years of Publishing-House HistoryHow to get 300 years of a company's history, combined with an equally long period of music and cultural history, between two book covers in a sophisticated and sensible way? How to select from the nearly incalculable quantity of material, how to separate essentials from what is less important? The start of the narrative is easy to find in the events of January 1719, though not so, where and when a break or even a turning point along its course ought to be made. During the last three years, our editor Thomas Frenzel has been confronted daily with such daunting questions. The result is not just a chronicle or publishing-house history. You will rather be granted a keyhole glimpse, and you will be taken on a journey through 300 years of European music and cultural history. Illustrated is the formation of the entire music publishing industry as well as the emergence of Leipzig as a city of music and the center of the world book trade, together with the fact that Breitkopf & Hartel significantly contributed to both developments. The highest standards of content, paper, printing, and binding emphasize the intrinsic value of this Breitkopf & Hartel production - unique in 300 years.504 pages in full color printing Chronicle of the firm's important events Essays on selected topicsHistorical visual and textual documents, anecdotes and all sorts of curiosities High-quality linen covers with dust jacketAbout 620 illustrations.

Ferruccio Busoni corresponded with the publishing house Breitkopf & Hartel for over 40 years, and practically the entire correspondence more than 1,500 missives has survived. They depict the composer, arranger, editor and pianist as a witty writer, who reports with great eloquence on his many interests. His epistolary partner, in this case, is the publisher who printed nearly all of Busonis works. The dialogue is often so intense that up to 15 letters per month are exchanged. The hesitant beginning evolved into something like a friendship that gradually cooled and practically led to an estrangement at the end. While the correspondence allows us many insights into the genesis of Busonis works, it is also punctuated with remarks about the situation of contemporary music and publishing, as well as with comments on the political developments of the day.

The editor, Engelbert Rontgen, writes in his foreword:Following a commission by the gentlemen Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig to produce a complete edition of Beethoven's string quartets supplied with bowing marks and fingerings, I undertook this task on the basis of the critical complete edition of these quartets, published in 1862. First of all, it seemed necessary to change the original slurring in some places to suit the bowing technique, with regard to performing and expression. In the quartets from Beethoven's early period, the performing marks often lack the accuracy and completeness that is required for an exact interplay, whereas they are given in the quartets of his later period almost everywhere with the greatest detail and precision, . Furthermore, the before mentioned scores contain a number of mistakes, which in all likelihood may have crept into the manuscripts as writing mistakes.I have therefore endeavored to carefully add the missing performing marks, as well as to correct the incorrect notes, without, however, claiming to have done everything that is questionable.Breitkopf Originals invite you to take a fresh look at 19th-century reception history. The music is printed clearly and in a larger than usual size.(Rebekah Smith, AUSTA Stringendo)The Breitkopf Originals series opens up a fascinating view into the Breitkopf & Hartel publishing-house archives. The Publication in facsimile of the auto graphic copy of Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in A major BWV 234 at the occasion of the Bach Anniversary Year 1985 has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the publishing house which so carefully preserved this precious manuscript in its archives for almost 200 years. The manuscript was acquired long ago by Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf, the brilliant and dynamic forefather of the publishing house Breitkopf & Hartel, who conducted a prosperous business selling music transcriptions in Leipzig. It is still unclear as to how he obtained the manuscript. Perhaps it had belonged to the estate of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, from whom Breitkopf apparently acquired a part of his Bach collection. The earliest reference to the manuscript's change of ownership is found in Breitkopfs Verzeichniss Musicalischer Werke of 1761, which includes Bach's Missa, a 2 Flauti, 2 Violini, Viola 4 Voci, Organo under the listing of copies of unpublished compositions. The copy was available at the price of 2 thl. (thalers) 12gl. (groschen). A few years later, in 1769, the same offer appeared again together with other works by Bach or ascribed to him in the Verzeichniss lateinischer und italianischer Kirchen-Musiken of Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf & Sohn. In more recent times, the work has been mentioned in Wilhelm Hitzig's Katalog des Archivs von Breitkopf & Hartel, revised in 1925, together with the continuo part, which was included with the copy and which was also originally written in Bach's own hand. The economic reorganization of the publishing house Breitkopf & Hartel after the Second World War made it necessary to sell the manuscript together with other works from the publisher's archives. This manuscript was to have been put up at auction by the auction house J. A. Stargardt. The catalogue, containing an informative commentary by Wolfgang Schmieder, was already printed, but before the auction could take place, the land of Hesse decided to purchase all the manuscripts, thus preventing the dispersion of this valuable collection. The manuscript was officially handed over to the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt on 29 October 1953. The A major Mass is still preserved there today, together with its fellow piece, the Mass in G major BWV 236.

He initially planned a work that was modest in its production and performance demands. The project was also given priority not least because of the prospect of the royalties which he would then receive. He once again turned to Breitkopf & Hartel for the performance material: 'Tristan und Isolde' is scheduled to be given its first performance at the end of this year. I still hope that it will take place in Karlsruhe under my guidance. Due to the celebrity that I have now acquired, I assume that a new and easily performable work of mine should be able to spread very quickly across the German stages in its first winter season. Wagner was wrong. although the publisher had spent a great deal of time and money in producing preliminary material, Wagner wrote to Breitkopf & Hartel from Munich in November 1864: The squalor of Germany's opera singers and the vile condition of its opera houses have so far dissuaded me from allowing a performance of 'Tristan und Isolde'. What I needed was an impassioned young monarch to restore my courage. Next spring you will hear about the work's premiere in Munich, and you will then hopefully become more confident about this publication.Richa rd Wagner wrote Tristan and Isolde in the years 1857 to 1859. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is rightly considered as the 19th-century music dramatist whose formal and harmonic originality, for example in Tristan and Isolde, provided a significant impetus to the development of 20th-century music. Despite Wagner's fame, his reuvre for piano remains practically unknown. Tobe sure, these primarily early works and occasional compositions hardly even hint at the outstanding characteristics of the later works such as leit-motifs, flowing transitions or original forms. Nonetheless, whoever is acquainted with Wagner's later music dramas will undoubtedly not fail to be impressed by the individual melodic and harmonic traits of his piano works. The Sonata in B-flat Major Op. 1 is of special interest to us today since it is Wagner's first published work, composed in 1831 and printed in 1832 by Breitkopf & Hartel. At that time, Wagner was studying counterpoint with Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. Weinlig, however, only agreed to give Wagner lessons if he promised to refrain from composing for half a year. In the course of his studies, Wagner was allowed to compose the piano sonata in B-flat Major as a kind of journeyman-work. His teacher Weinlig succeeded in having the work published by Breitkopf & Hartel. Hence the dedication of this piece to Weinlig is not surprising, since the 18-year-old Wagner would otherwise have had great difficulty finding a publisher. This Sonata in B-flat Major, which has long been out of print, is a reproduction of the first edition by Breitkopf & Hartel (plate number 10433). For this reprint, obvious typographical errors have been corrected (missing or wrong accidentals and dynamic indications). The work presents a four-movement classical sonata form and is stylistically reminiscent of Mozart and Beethoven. Shortly before composing this sonata, Wagner wrote a piano reduction of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was easily playable and yet gratifying to hear. This helps explain the octave-doublings typical of piano reductions. Wiesbaden, Fall 1980Respectfully dedicated to Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig.

After Peter Gulke's revised edition of the Unfinished, here is the new edition (1992) of the Fifth by Peter Hauschild. Since the Fifth Symphony was first published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1885, a text-critical edition based on the sources of this work was long overdue. Though the alterations in the earlier text were made by none other than Johannes Brahms, they are treated here as footnotes, for our new edition rigorously follows the primary sources.Die neue Partiturausgabe ist der Qualitat des Werkes ebenburtig.
