Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The Oregon Symphony occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. A dramatic opening marked Moderato Maestoso announces the thematic material for Concert Dance and Intermezzo. The dramatic opening quickly ends and an Allegro begins with solo Latin percussion instruments. The Allegro winds its way through the material, and then it transitions to Andante Rubato; where a solo trumpet plays the secondary theme. Once the slower section has played out, the Allegro tempo returns with a solo by piccolo backed by the previous Latin percussion instruments. Several key changes and volume variances provide a transition to the original theme. Smith combines several of these themes and fragments together for an exciting conclusion.

Allegro Brillante is the first movement of Dragonland for band. The first performance (under the original title, A Short Symphony) was given by the L.E. Dieruff High School Concert Band, conducted by Raymond S. Becker, Jr., on April 21, 1978. The work was subsequently revised, and first performed in its new version by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Band, conducted by Donald S. George, on November 23rd, 1980. Allegro Brillante is the first movement of four. The music is almost profligate in its tunefulness, quick to change tack and tempo, and will benefit from an interpretation of headstrong abandon. A slow, solemn chorale opens in b-flat minor, which contains all of the material for the piece. The second statement with a countermelody played by first trumpet and trombone. A flute cadenza brings the opening to a close, and an Allegro is followed with fragments from the opening theme. The slow chorale is brought back one last time; the tune is then played Allegro Vivo, with the original countermelody played by Smith’s own instrument – the French horn. A piece easily playable for concert and contest.
