Scherzi

'Three Scherzi for violin and piano follow closely the Minuet and Trio form used so often for lighter movements in eighteenth and early nineteenth century sonatas and symphonies. In each piece the Minuet isdivided into two sections and each section is repeated; similarly the Trio section is also divided into two repeated sections in which the music is generally more gently paced. After the Trio the minuet is played againimmediately this time without repeats. In these Scherzi I have chosen to use variants of the original of each section in most instances rather than make exact repetitions. The first Scherzo lasts approximately 3 minutes thesecond 6 minutes and the third 2 minutes. Part of my interest and purpose in writing these pieces was to use an identical but highly elastic form for three pieces of different durations. I was also intrigued by the form’shistorical development and evolution into the Scherzo and I hope this explains the atmosphere and style of the music.The material for each of the three pieces is different although the harmonic and rhythmic worlds ofeach one are similar and as a result they do form a complete work in three movements. However each of the three Scherzi may be played separately. These three pieces were written between September 2004 and August2007.'Brian Elias

Chopin published his Scherzi nos. 1 3 at more-or-less regular intervals in 1835 1837 and 1840 almost as if he’d planned them in advance. He published his fourth and final work in this genre after a further three years in1843. When compared with its predecessors which were largely bleak in mood this Scherzo no. 4 is surprisingly cheerful. With its sparkling runs and its chains of chords like dappled brush strokes this work seems to summon upthe fairy-like spirit of Mendelssohn’s scherzi. In editorial terms however it is problematical. Three parallel first editions were published in Germany France and England and the many variants between them have to beinvestigated one at a time to determine their authenticity. This is a task that has been solved meticulously in this revised stand-alone Urtext edition which explains the transmission of this work in an exemplary transparentmanner for today’s pianists.

Piano Sonata in b minor op. 5-During his youth Richard Strauss composed a large number of works for piano solo among them numerous sonatas. Yet it was only the Sonata in b-minor that he obviously considered important enough to want to see in print. It was composed in two versions presumably between winter of 1880 and spring of 1881 and published one year later. Here Strauss still plainly follows his compositional forebears from German Romanticism. The two middle movements of this demanding sonata in particular directly recall Mendelssohn???s Songs Without Words??? and scherzi. This is the first Urtext edition of this piano sonata.

Music in original Clefs Structure: Score Pages: pp. 128 Size: 235x315 mm Claudio Monteverdi’s (Cremona 1567 - Venezia 1643) nine books of madrigals can be divided into three groups. The first two books were written in the so-called Cremonese period (until 1590), when the composer was still very much under the influence of his teacher, Marcantonio Ingegneri. Books 3-5 were composed during the Mantuan years (1591-1612); the innovative style of these compositions - especially those in the fourth book - gave origin to a controversy with Artusi and other musicians, which ended, on Monteverdi’s side, with the theoretical definition of ‘seconda pratica’, which is mentioned in the preface to the fifth book, and further developed by his brother Cesare in the introduction to Scherzi musicali (1607). The last four books were conceived during the composer’s Venetian years; in 1613 Monteverdi was hired as maestro di cappella in S. Marco, an office he held until his death; he thus became the foremost musical figure in the entire Republic. The ninth book was published posthumously in Venice (1651). This is the first complete Urtext publication including the entire corpus of madrigals composed by the great Cremonese master. An edition which was impatiently expected by musicologists and musicians who have until now had to use the admirable, albeit timeworn Malipiero edition. Every volume is issued both in modern and original clefs. Vocal part-books and instrumental parts are also available.

Commissioned by the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts Limited with funds provided by the Arts Council of Wales for premiere in August 2012 by the Carducci String Quartet in St. Andrew?s Church Presteigne.Composer's Note.'Some years ago I noted down the opening theme of what I anticipated would be a relatively Classical string quartet ?Classical? in the sense of the forms adopted plus perhaps a predominantly lyrical tone of voice. The commission for this work from the Presteigne Festival for their 30th anniversary in 2012 gave me the opportunity of putting into practice this long-held idea. It isdedicated to the Festival and to the Carducci Quartet whose career as much-admired friends and colleagues I have greatly enjoyed.The only break with ?classical? tradition is that there are five movements instead of four with two Scherzi as the second and third though both these are very short and contrasting. I found myself listening to Haydn?s string quartets a lot before and during the composition of this work and I hope the spirit of his delight in writing for this medium is echoed in my own music. The opening movement is in sonata form unusually for me and lyricism is I hope the basis of it though there is a good deal of activity at times. The Scherzo light and marked by frequently-changing rhythms is followed by an equally short but ferocious Perpetuum mobile marked Wild und rasch (one of my favourite German tempo markings). The fourth movement is an intense Adagio in which a single phrase uttered strongly in unison is gradually transformed into gentle diatonic chords before the close intermingled with cadenzas for cello for viola and for the two violins together. The finale (a Rondo) resumes the classical tone of the first movement but apart from one dance-like episode it builds up a fair head of steam towards a final Presto which however ascends slows and quietens towards a gentle summer sky at dusk.'

Scherzo in b minor op. 20-The Scherzo In B Minor one of Chopin’s most radical compositions leaves very few listeners untouched. The main part which is wild and full of brutal dissonances frames an intimate Trio inwhich Chopin transcribes a Polish song for the Piano with a magic touch. According to legend the work was composed at the end of 1830 in Vienna when Chopin had just left his homeland for good. TheNovember uprising had broken out in Warsaw and the composer alternated between wanting to revolt against fate and feeling inconsolably homesick. The revised edition of the Scherzo In B Minor is available as asingle edition in Henle Urtext for the first time – the Scherzi 2–4 are to follow finally rounded off by the revised complete volume.

Entre 1752 et 1753, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo décora l'immense voûte du Grand Escalier d'Honneur de la Résidence de Würzburg, dont Balthasar Neumann, l'architecte-ingénieur des Schönborn, premier architecte du prince-évêque, avait assumé la construction. Après la paix d'Utrecht, le comte Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn ouvre l'un des plus importants chantiers de l'époque, celui du château de Würzburg, et le confie en 1719 à Neumann. L'originalité de Neumann consiste en une pensée géométrique particulièrement apte à concevoir et combiner les volumes, à orchestrer les surfaces et les effets de profondeur. Neumann avait reçu une formation d'artilleur et d'ingénieur militaire et nourrissait une passion des synthèses lotharingiennes, quand il n'embrassait pas des projets de 'grande architecture' européenne. Lointain héritier de Guarini, il pousse plus loin qu'aucun autre architecte allemand la réflexion novatrice sur les structures et résout ses problèmes d'espace par ce que les historiens d'art appellent une 'interpénétration syncopée'. Neumann aimait l'ampleur, non la pompe pittoresque. Il voulut édifier à Würzburg un grandiose édifice de portée universelle. En 1752, le prince-évêque Karl Philipp von Greiffenklau confia à Tiepolo l'exécution des fresques monumentales décorant la voûte en ellipse gigantesque de l'escalier d'honneur (30 x 18 m), où le peintre mit en scène l'Olympe et les quatre continents. Tiepolo s'acquitta de sa tâche en deux cent dix-huit journées de travail. La fresque - à l'exécution de laquelle ont contribué Giandomenico Tiepolo, Urlaub et peut-être même Lorenzo Tiepolo - est signée et datée de 1753 sur la corniche, au dessous de l'Asie. La vue d'ensemble du plafond, avec une perspective déformant les bords, est centrée, en plein ciel, sur la figure triomphante d'Apollon, dieu de la lumière. Il s'agit d'une représentation mythologique du lever du soleil. Il se dégage de cette vision de l'Olympe une impression d'émergence aérienne de la profondeur, irrésistible et vertigineuse. Sur la corniche, Tiepolo a représenté les Quatre parties du monde. L'allégorie de l'Afrique se situe à l'Est, du côté intérieur. L'Asie figure à l'Ouest, ornant le côté longitudinal donnant sur la Cour d'Honneur. Le mur ouest est percé de trois fenêtres et s'ouvre sur un horizon dégagé. L'allégorie de l'Asie - emblème de la science et de la monarchie - apparaît en costume d'apparat, assise en amazone sur un éléphant et parée de joyaux somptueux. C'est une figure savante, animée d'un mouvement de torsion. La frise de l'Asie reste une énigme et la signification symbolique des divers personnages du groupe à l'obélisque n'a, par exemple, pas encore été entièrement élucidée. Des mondes historiques coexistent ou s'affrontent: on remarque le Golgotha, les hiéroglyphes de pierre, le serpent d'Esculape, l'obélisque, une pyramide et la princesse d'Egypte, la capture d'une tigresse, le perroquet, illustrant la faune, et surtout, au premier plan, la masse des esclaves enchaînés, des prisonniers gisant au sol ou des sujets prosternés. Cet aspect trouble de la frise a d'ailleurs retenu l'attention des commentateurs. La présence d'une escorte de soldats fait sans doute allusion à l'importance militaire du continent, mais il est manifeste que le thème de la captivité y est traité conjointement à celui de la servitude volontaire. Un esprit nouveau souffle sur cette dernière frise: des figures dramatiques, livides, des plans fragmentés, des situations amèrement réalistes, un enchevêtrement de corps distordus et anonymes. Un vent immatériel semble tout ployer, tout emporter sur son passage, dans l'urgence d'une impérieuse nécessité. L'Asie se souvient des gravures de Rembrandt, retrouve la manière des vingt-quatre hallucinantes eaux-fortes - les Scherzi di fantasia (1739-1757) - de Tiepolo lui-même et annonce les Caprices de Goya. Le capriccio semble le principe formel de cette fresque monumentale: un assemblage fantastique d'éléments disparates, une recomposition insolite de mondes engloutis, une évocation morbide d'espaces cacéraux. Je considère l'Asie de Tiepolo comme une sorte de manifeste anticipé de la musique de notre temps: un monde privé de couleurs, qui tourne au brun et au gris, et néanmoins dominé par une forme d'accélération expressive. Tiepolo a écrit là une sorte d'art poétique de la musique de l'avenir. On y découvre un éventail de vitesses, un spectre de vitesses, des espaces turbulents, des dispositifs en porte-à-faux, un entrelacs d'axes et de boucles. Flux, pivotements, tensions latérales, dilatations, projections, degrés d'éloignement sont les nouvelles catégories de cet art poétique. L'idée principale est qu'il faut s'attacher d'abord aux gestes élémentaires, qui priment la considération toujours seconde des spectres de variation. Ma propre Asie d'après Tiepolo est une commande de la Westdeutscher Rundfunk et de l'Ensemble Recherche, avec le soutien de la Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung. Elle fait suite à l'Afrique, créée dans les mêmes conditions en 2005 à Witten. J'ai employé dans l'Asie une large palette de percussions d'un type nouveau (gamme chromatique de gongs philippins, de cloches de vache, de rins japonais). J'ai réutilisé le procédé des temporalités paradoxales de Saturne, consistant à rapporter à une mesure métrique et métronomique commune des vitesses de déroulement et des types de développement et d'écriture très différents. La première partie de la pièce fait un emploi systématique des sons multiphoniques des instruments à vent, à la manière d'un continuum électronique. La fin, plus apaisée, gravite autour d'un duo de clarinette contrebasse et de marimba, dont la mélodie est obtenue par un jeu d'archets. Le piano tient d'un bout à l'autre un rôle central, dans une sorte de véhémence acoustique qui ne parviendrait jamais à la formulation subjective. With these works he carried on the splendid French tradition of this genre bringing it to its peak. Vierne's compositional models are clearly discernible: primarly Franck and Widor but also Mendelssohn and Schumann. Along with the beautiful melodic ideas in his slow movements and the occasion ally bizarre ideas in his scherzi and intermezzi it is above all his chromaticism that characterizes Vierne's style. The complete edition of his organ works provides a musical text as accurate and authentic as possible: It corrects obvious misprints from the first editions provides commentary onquestionable passages and offers alternative solutions. It is based on the first editions the composer???s manuscripts and lists of corrections from colleagues pupils and present-day interpreters closely concerned with Vierne???s music.
