Chopin published his Scherzi nos. 1 3 at more-or-less regular intervals, in 1835, 1837 and 1840 almost as if he'd planned them in advance. He published his fourth and final work in this genre after a further three years, in 1843. When compared with its predecessors, which were largely bleak in mood, this Scherzo no. 4 is surprisingly cheerful. With its sparkling runs and its chains of chords like dappled brush strokes, this work seems to summon up the fairy-like spirit of Mendelssohn's scherzi. In editorial terms, however, it is problematical. Three parallel first editions were published in Germany, France and England and the many variants between them have to be investigated one at a time to determine their authenticity. This is a task that has been solved meticulously in this revised, stand-alone Urtext edition, which explains the transmission of this work in an exemplary, transparent manner for today's pianists.

Until 2014, the Scherzo in A minor was known only in a version for strings (SC 34) and its connection to the Trio in F major SC 52 was not documented. Newly found sources made it possible to identify Puccini's orchestral version of the Scherzo and to assert that in fact the Trio is conceived for the Scherzo. This edition corresponds to the first critical edition of the Scherzo in its original orchestral version and the first edition of the Trio in an orchestration completed by Virgilio Bernardoni. The Scherzo and the original versions of the Trio (Puccini's orchestration of the mm. 1-12 and the complete draft of the framework of the score) are included in the vol. II/1 of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (Works for orchestra, Carus 56.002).

Schubert's delightful lyrical and bouncy Scherzo from Symphony No. 9 (The Great C major) has been arranged for 8-part Trombone Ensemble by Randall Malmstrom. Arguably Schubert's greatest symphonic work, the Great C major is almost an hour in length, bursting with melody from every corner. Malmstrom's arrangement of the complete Scherzo movement really works and is appropriate for advanced performers. Be prepared for a joyous workout!

That Schumann truly dug his heels into symphonic creation becomes clear at the latest when we look not only at his four well-known symphonies, but also at the works between the genres, such as the Overture, Scherzo and Finale. Unlike the traditional symphonic form, this work has no slow movement. Schumann spoke of it as a suite which hints at a loose connection of movements and as a sinfonietta. Ultimately, he decided to name it after the headings of the three movements which also share common traits among one another. Overture, Scherzo and Finale is being published here for the first time with an Urtext score and parts. The genesis of the work was marked by corrections and revisions. Schumann subjected the work to a thorough revision after the premiere performance and, after the publication of the orchestral parts in 1846, made more changes for the first edition of the score seven years later.Urtext of Schumanns Sinfonietta.

Scherzo from Op. 4 is a charming presto for string orchestra. It is based on the third movement of Sibelius's String Quartet B-flat major, on which the composer added a double bass part. The premiere of the string orchestra version took place on 17 February 1894 in Turku, composer conducting. Reviews were enthusiastic: Sibelius's music appeared in its most beautiful splendor and instrumental brilliance in the Presto movement, where the singing motive was carried out with charm and beauty - -, cascades of diligently and brilliantly composed scherzo-figures and melodies [give a] thoroughly delightful and frisky, lively character..

Rheinberger's string quartets, his string quintet and his nonet for winds and strings were often performed and were very successful works during his lifetime. Their density, but also the delicateness of the scherzo movements are in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn and these traits are combined with Rheinberger's sense for the clear, defined structure of the movements and solid contrapuntal writing. The octet for winds and strings is published here for the first time and the nonet, which is actually a reworking of this octet that Rheinberger undertook some twenty years later, is also published in this volume. Rheinberger made major changes from the original octet and he added two new movements to the nonet. Both works show especially the interest and pleasure which he derived from the variety in the differentiation of colors in ensemble playing. The Thema mit Veranderungen op. 93, which until now has been known as a work for string quartet, is published here with the double bass part which Rheinberger later added.

Inspired by the Slavonic Dances of Czech master AntonÃn Dvořák, Joseph Compello has written his own Furiant, a Bohemian dance, usually in triple meter with frequently shifting accents. This dazzling little original piece makes much of the contrast between 6/8 and 3/4. This variety of rhythmic pulse gives the piece tremendous energy and momentum. Slavic Scherzo is a selection that will energize the band and delight the audience in equal measure.
