Ces sonates sont parmi les oeuvres epoch-making du répertoire pour violon et aujourd'hui figure dans le répertoire standard de tous les violonistes. Il est d'autant plus surprenant, donc, que jusqu'à présent il n'y a pas eu édition Urtext de ces travaux importants.Le score est basé sur une première édition supervisée par Corelli lui-même. D'après ce que nous savons de la performance en temps de Corelli, cependant, était plusattend de la violoniste qu'une lecture musicale de la partition imprimée: il était d'usage d'ajouter des ornements à la limite de l'improvisation, avec l'embellissement et 'variations' comme vous le souhaitez. These sonatas are among the epoch-making works of the violin repertoire and nowadays figure in the standard repertoire of every violinist. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that until now there has been no Urtext edition of such significant works. The score is based on a first edition supervised by Corelli himself. From what we know of performance practice in Corelli’s time, however, more was expected of the violinist than just a musical reading of the printed score: it was customary to add ornamentation verging on improvisation, with embellishment and variations as desired. The original score is therefore presented here with the earliest documented ornamentation from a reprint published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1708. This ornamentation is not meant to be slavishly imitated, but to stimulate the player to find their own creative and stylistically confident interpretation of the score. As Roger did not specify any ornaments for the sonatas in the second volume, the variations as desired used by Corelli’s pupil Geminiani have been reproduced with the ninth Sonata as an example. Advice on performance is given by the Cologne baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel. This advice does not only apply to ornamentation, but also to articulation, bowings and more besides, calling for specific markings in the separate violin part. The realisation of the continuo part echoes the fashions of that time. Here too, advice on performance is meant to stimulate free interpretation by the continuo player. A figured bass part is included for the player who prefers to read the accompaniment from figures. The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was composed over an apparently frequently interrupted period of three years, an extraordinarily long time for Strauss's early creative phase. The compositional process spawned two independent versions of the work, the first of which is published for the first time on the basis of the text in the Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss in the current edition as a practical musical text. The genesis of the two versions and the reasons for revision can only be reconstructed in part: only one of the surviving autographs bears a date and the second version only survives in printed form. What is more, Strauss did not communicate in greater detail on this composition in correspondence with his family and friends. There are enormous differences between the two versions of the Sonata: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements Larghetto and Allegro vivace, replacing them with a newly composed Andante and Finale. In the first movement, Allegro con brio, Strauss retained the thematic-motivic material and compositionally complex passages such as the three-voice fugue in the development section (from bar 241 in the first version and bar 275 in the second version) almost intact in the new version of the sonata, but also undertook extensive alterations, particularly in the structure of the piano part, the motivic-thematic development of the movement and its harmony which became far more ambitious.12 Particular attention should be drawn to the repetitive accompaniment of the con espressione theme beginning in bar 32 and the significantly shorter development in the first version. The current printed edition of the first version of Richard Strauss's Cello Sonata now makes it possible to follow Strauss's compositional development during this period. The significance of the differences between the versions also mean that two sonata compositions for violoncello and piano by Richard Strauss with fundamental disparities in their underlying character are now available for performance.
