Music for wind ensemble also know as Harmoniemusik played an important part in Mozart’s Austria. Wind ensembles were not only cheaper to employ but they also were suitable for outdoor performance and so appealed to the lesser nobility of the time.Mozart composed the three great wind serenades during his first two years in Vienna with the first of them the Serenade No.10 in B flat K.361 seeing a huge expansion in terms of instrumentation and length. Instead of six (or eight) instruments this serenade is scored for thirteen instruments which include a string double bass. Serenade in Eb major K. 375-Late in the evening on his name day in 1781 Mozart was on his way to bed when he suddenly heard familiar sounds coming from outside: the six musicians who had given the première of his Serenade in E-flatMajor two weeks beforehand and whom he had described as ?poor fellows but who can blow together quite nicely? had now met in the courtyard and were serenading him with his own work. Although it was officially composedfor Therese Hickel in actual fact Mozart mainly wanted to impress Emperor Joseph II whose chief of the royal chamber music often went to Therese?s house ?That?s the reason why I also put a little effort into it?. Mozart was about to be married when hepulled this Wind piece out of his hat. Yet the results are far removed from the detached courtly style of the Serenade: the work one of the jewels of the Wind repertoire opens full of earnestness and profundityin the gloomy key of c minor. The high opinion Mozart had of this octet is evident in the fact that he later arranged it for String quintet.

for two Oboes 2 Clarinets 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons-The Serenade in E-flat K.375 exists in two versions one for two clarinets two horns and two bassoons and another for the same forces plus two oboes forming an octet.From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October the name-day of St. Theresa.The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextetwith the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics he also altered the work’s melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre thereby enabling him for example to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets.
