Piano Trio no. 1 in d minor op. 49. Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839: it appeared in 1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn?s d minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: ?It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time: a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.? Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn · Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

Fantasy Pieces op. 88 for Piano Trio. The Fantasy Pieces op. 88 are Schumann?s first contribution to the genre of the piano trio and date from his very prolific ?chamber music year? 1842. However, Schumann needed an unusually long time to give the work its final form: the Fantasy Pieces were released only in the autumn of 1850 after several revisions. The brevity and the modest technical demands of the four charming character pieces make them an ideal entry into the world of Schumann?s chamber music also for non-professional musicians. The Fantasy Pieces, taken from the volume Schumann · Piano Trios HN 916, are now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

The autograph of a composition always makes fascinating reading - and this is particularly true of Schubert's Trio in Eb major op. 100, as it underwent many changes during its composition. The manuscript, parts of which were greatly revised, bears eloquent witness to this and offers an opportunity to trace the intricacies of Schubert's phrasing and articulation. This source is in a private collection and our facsimile makes it accessible to the public for the very first time. It is, of course, in proven Henle quality, in lavish four-colour printing and with an extensive introductory text with in-depth information about the work. When Smetana composed his Piano trio in the autumn of 1855 it was an act of catharsis to recover from the death of his four-year-old daughter Friederike. This highly emotional work was also his first large-scale piece of chambermusic. Its first public performance in December 1855 was regrettably not a great success and so Smetana embarked on a protracted process of reworking it. By the late 1850s it had reached its current form. Smetana always liked toperform it but only found a publisher for it in 1880 when one of his pupils invited the Hamburg publisher Hugo Pohle to a performance at short notice. Smetana specialist Milan Posp Å¡il has based this Henle Urtext edition on thefirst edition by Pohle but has also drawn upon the earlier sources. This has enabled him to iron out numerous inconsistencies found in the first edition.

Piano Trios-Les trios avec piano comptent parmi les grands genres de la musique de chambre classique et Brahms s?y consacra très tôt. Il composa son opus 8 au cours de l?automne et de l?hiver 1853/54 c?est-à-dire à l?âge de 20 ans. Par contre ses deux autres trios avec piano op. 87 en Ut majeur et op. 101 en ut mineur ne virent le jour que 28 et 32 ans plus tard. On sait que pa-rallèlement au trio en Ut majeur Brahms travaillait aussi à un autre trio en Mi bémol majeur qu?il détruisit probablement. En 1889 il décida de reprendre son premier trio avec piano et le remania à tel point qu?il écrivit à Clara Schumann: «J?ai réécrit mon trio en Si majeur». L?édition Henle-Urtext reprendle trio op. 8 dans la seconde version parue en 1891 mais pro-pose également la première version en annexe.
