In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers however this is a misconception – the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

Away in a Manger is a Christmas carol first published in the late nineteenth century and used widely throughout the English-speaking world. Ranking joint second in a 1996 Gallup Poll it is one of the most popular carols in Britain. The earliest known publication in The Myrtle ascribed the lyrics to German Protestant reformer Martin Luther explicitly referencing his 400th birthday in 1883. For many years this attribution continued to be made however it appears to be false: the hymn is found nowhere among Luther's works and was most likely written specifically for his 400th birthday and attributed to him as a ‘marketing gimmick’.Thisedition for SSA Choir presents the Normandy tune as arranged by Ronald Corp a composer conductor and Church of England priest.

Kantate zum Reformationsfest [Rekonstruktion: Reinhold Kubik]-J.S. Bach's Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott for SATB and Orchestra.Bach's Reformation cantata based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716 now missing which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730 Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on in the 1730s or 1740s Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with achorale setting which was unique spacious and motet-like in its style; this uniquely in this respect incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available.

Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World When I survey the wondrous cross I sing the Mighty Power of God) 'There is a Land of Pure Delight' is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Cradle Song-Vuggesang / Cradle Song for Organ solo by Peter Bruun (2016). The piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. Dedicated to Vibeke Vanggaard. 'Peter Bruun's cradle song Vuggesang is an inventive and refreshingly unconventional set of variations on 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. There are some fascinating textures here and the whole thing is a far cry from a dutiful neo-classical perusal of stock partita motifs - the crystalline final variation which disappears into nothing in the final bars is especially striking. Numerous rhythmic complexities throughout the score will need thought but the piece will reward thediligent.' - Stephen Farr Choir & Organ Magazine 'Organ music makes up only a small part of Danish composer Peter Bruun’s (b. 1968) varied output. Nonetheless  Vuggesang (‘Cradle Song’) from 2016 is idiomatically and sympathetically written for the organ: a series of five variations on Luther’s hymn Vom Himmel hoch that affords variety of texture colour and mood. A clear head is needed to negotiate some of the rhythmic complexities but this is a fine work for the Christmas season that will reward performer and listener.' - Sunday by Sunday Â

Cantata for the First Sunday of Advent-Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland BWV 61Cantata for the First Sunday of AdventBach began two of his cantatas with Martin Luther`s Advent hymn 'Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland' a German version of the early church hymn 'Veni redemptor gentium'. One of the most gripping solo parts (following the pattern recitative aria recitative aria) is the bass recitative on the words of the Revelation with its highly expressive declamation of the vocal line and the naive graphicness of the pounding string accompaniment.Equally captivating is the following soprano aria which 'opens its heart' upon the Saviour's 'knocking' in amelody full of the cheerful tidings of Advent. The cantata ends brilliantly with a lovely figurative chorale movement enhanced by the interplay of a lively bustling Violin part which ultimately soars upward to breathtaking heights.Urtext of the New Bach EditionPerformance material (BA10061) vocal score (BA10061-90) & study score format 22.5 x 16cm (TP1061) available for sale.

Kantate Zum 1. Advent. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The opening chorus uses the first verse of the old plainsong hymn 'Veni redemptor gentium', which in the paraphrase by Martin Luther has become the most important Advent hymn of the Protestant Church.
