'Mr. Mozart Kapellmeister wishes to announce to the most worthy public the appearance in print of three of his recently contrived Piano concertos. These three concertos may be performed not only with a large Orchestra including wind instruments but also a quattro that is with two Violins one Viola and Violoncello. They will be issued early in April of this year (1783).'As this advertisement shows it was Mozart's intention to keep the accompaniment part flexible in his Piano concertos K.413-5 and as we know from a letter Mozart wrote to his father in K.449 as well. In addition to orchestral forces it is also possible to use achamber setting with string instruments one to a part. This chamber music edition accommodates this option thereby enriching Mozart's charming chamber music with Piano.These editions of Mozart's Piano Concertos are based on the Urtext editions published in the New Mozart Edition. He wrote it in 1779 after returning from Paris and Mannheim.For two decades it was known only in a few copyists? manuscripts. The first edition did not appear until 1802. In his Kongsgaard Variations (2006) Swedish composer Anders Hillborg takes the Arietta-theme from Beethoven’s last piano-sonata No. 32 in C minor Op. 111 as the basis for an evocative 16-minute string quartet. Beethoven’s sublime music drifts strangely through the centuries and is warped vaporised and refashioned as if in the words of Hillborg the Arietta ‘is dreaming yet another variation on itself’.

John McCabe's Nocturnal For Piano Quintet was composed in 1966 commissioned by the Park Lane Group London and first performed by the Lancaster University Ensemble. Duration: Approximately 13 minutes. Composers Note:  The title of this work is a reference to John Donne's poem A Nocturnal upon St Lucie's Day the mood of which is reflected in the quintet. It falls into several movements played without a break: Introduction (Andante) setting forth the main thematic ideas of the music; Nocturne 1 (Allegro vivo) an agitated virtuoso scherzo-like section; a tripartite central part of the work consisting of two Cadenzasframing a brief Interlude the first Cadenza being largely for strings the second mainly for piano and the Interlude harking back to the feeling of the Introduction; Nocturne 2 (Andante molto) a slow piece gradually building to a unison theme on strings accompanied by a tolling piano background. This dies down to lead to an Epilogue ending with a final reference to the work's opening bars.

The four shortmovementsfully evoke the atmosphere of home music-making for which it was written. TheCzechedition goes by the title Drobnosti (Miniatures) and is accompanied by a shortGavotte,dated 1890 and also written in a simpler style for three violins. This String Quartet along with other chamber works by Onslow is worthy of serious study alongside works of other composers of the period such as Beethoven. It has a lively and tuneful first movement a beautiful theme and variations (including a florid variation with an exciting part for 1st Violin) a pretty minuet and trio and a rousing final movement. All instruments have interesting parts.George Onslow an Anglo-French composer was born in Clermont-Ferrand in July 1784 and died there in October 1853. Three of his String Quintets and his Piano quintet are also published by SJ Music (Q1993-5 Q1991-1 Q1993-4 and Q2005-2).
