String Quartet No. 2 (MusÚe MÚcanique) was commissioned by the Ciompi Quartet for their series at Duke University with funds from Meet the Composer. The first performances were given on April 25 and 26 2002. The Ciompi also helped in the preparation of this edition and have recorded both String Quartet No. 1 and String Quartet No. 2 for Albany Records (Troy 717). The second string quartet is dedicated with enormous admiration and gratitude to my friends Eric Pritchard Hsiao-Mei Ku Jonathan Bagg and Fred Raimi of the Ciompi Quartet.

Set of Parts-At the time of its creation the First String Quartet was a truly revolutionary work and was considered nearly impossible to perform by existing quartets of the day.The piece was the first working example of Carter's 'Metric Modulation' which gives the impression that several different independent musical layers are existing simultaneously. Arranged for 2 Violins Viola and Cello.

Score-The composer was honoured by the New York Music Critics' Circle for this work composed in 1958.
