From the opening 12 chimes representing the origins of the classic gospel song, this arrangement is a true inspiration. One of the most recognized sacred pieces of all time, it has been covered by artists such as Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Wayne Newton, Anne Murray nd Johnny Cash. A testimony of God's saving grace, the song was used in Billy Graham crusades and has been sung in thousands of churches. This arrangement joins the piece with a quote from the beloved hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness and the result is outstanding. Secret Mission is a cinematic depiction of a spy on a mission to defeat a nefarious villain. This was inspired by my love for several spies and superheroes from movies and television series, both serious and humorous. With exciting parts for all players, I hope your imagination is sparked by this accessible and melodic piece. In the opening, the spy receives his mission in grand fashion, as the title sequence rolls across the screen. After a dramatic pause (m. 10), the spy is on the chase! The melody at m. 11 depicts the spy doing reconnaissance on his enemy. The villain reveals his evil plan, and soon, the hero and the villain face off in an epic battle! Who do you think wins? Is it a serious thriller or a hilarious cartoon? Decide for your own as you see the end credits scroll! Itas an epic journey sure to spark your imagination. For smaller ensembles, the power chords in the low brass can be divided such that trombones take the top note, and euphonium the bottom, or divide it as is appropriate for your ensemble. At m. 9, and as it recurs, the students should choose a note that is comfortably in their playing range that they can play beautifully. They should, however, strive to choose a different note than their neighbor, and can change the note as this technique recurs. The melody at measure 11 should sound soft, light, and sneaky! Do not let the students get too loud at m. 17. If anything, this section should be slightly softer. The woodblock and cowbell add a touch of urgency (like the ticking of a clock) and humor (I got a fevah!). Make sure the countermelody at m. 25 can be heard clearly. At m. 33, dynamic contrast is very important. If needed, a crash cymbal from a drum set can be used, and both cymbals can be struck by a drumstick. In either case, suspended cymbal should be played with a drumstick (unless rolling: then, use a pair of yarn mallets). I sincerely hope you and your students enjoy the cinematic journey, and thank you for choosing my music!.Secret Mission is a cinematic depiction of a spy on a mission to defeat a nefarious villain.

Castl e Creek was written by Dan Welcher in celebration of the Aspen Music Festival's 40th anniversary, and served as a special tribute to the Festival's longtime President, Gordon Hardy. Castle Creek itself is a tributary of the Roaring Fork River on which the Aspen Music Festival campus (as well as Hardy's home) is built. Gordon's initials (G.A.H.) are used as the musical basis for the fanfare, which is centered on the ascending pitches G, A and B, and reflects the upward motion and positivity of the Aspen Music Festival itself. For advanced players. Duration: 5'.Program Note by the ComposerThere is no “secret program†or hidden meaning in this lively, five-minute work: it was intended as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Aspen Music Festival, and as a special tribute to the Festival’s longtime President, Gordon Hardy. The title CASTLE CREEK refers to a tributary of the Roaring Fork River on which the Aspen Music Festival campus (as well as Mr. Hardy’s home) is built. The work pays homage to Gordon Hardy by utilizing his initials (“G.A.H.â€) as a musical motive: the three letters correspond to the pitches G, A, and B). This three-note group forms the basis of the fanfare that opens the work, and it also serves as an ostinato, a bass line, and a general means of organizing the work’s tonal centers. Because the three notes are in ascending order, the ever-upward direction of the Aspen Music Festival and the positive energy of Gordon Hardy are readily evident. The athletic fanfare that begins the work (marked “noble, but energeticâ€) is scored for brass and percussion alone, and may be played as a separate piece. The rest of the ensemble joins at the conclusion of the fanfare, and a spirited tune in 9/8 issues from the woodwinds. After this is given a thorough workout, a middle section in faster 3/4 time provides machine-like energy. Perhaps it is the energy of the Festival, in high gear. At the height of this, the music of the fanfare returns in broad open notes in the brass, with the machine still pulsing in support. The overture ends in a burst of motion, with the three-note motive in its highest transposition. My colleague and former student Paul Bissell made this excellent transcription from the orchestral original.
