It is not widely known that the popular composer Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was also a music critic, nor that he was professor of musical theory and harmony, instrumentation and free composition at the Moscow Conservatoire (1866-1878). His teaching there bore fruit in the form of the 'Manual for the practical mastering of harmony' printed in Moscow in 1872. This textbook played an important part in Russian musical training: it was written before the manuals by Rimsky-Korsakoff and Arensky and is thus the very first originally Russian book of harmonic theory, which may be of interest and of some use to readers today.

The premise of this book is simple, and it lays a very strong foundation for the basics of improvisation that absolutely anyone can understand. This manual is in treble clef and is meant for any and all instruments. Bower breaks down three ways to improvise on a melody. 'Chord Form' which is based on the chord tones of the song, 'Scale form' based on the notes found in the scale tones of the song's major scale, and 'Combined forms' where improvisation is a mixture of chord tones and scale forms. Harri Viitanen's three passions are the organ, nature and the stars, and he combines the first two of these in Images d'oiseaux. The birdsongs which function as an important element in the work were studied from recordings made in the vicinity of Viitanen's home: they are the nightingale, pied fly-catcher, blackbird and great tit. The work is written for a three or four-manual instrument with the addition of two clicking stones which contribute to the birdsong effects.
