Juha ni Nuorvala's (b. 1961) Variations ex Bene quondam for string orchestra was commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in 2017. Collaboration with the musicians led to experiments with microtonality. The work is based on a late medieval song from the Finnish collection Piae cantiones (Pious songs). The song is processed with various means of contemporary music. It also meets the New Age of California - the musical scene of the teenaged composer. The duration of the work is 25 minutes, and the performance material is available for hire from the publisher.

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This is an arrangement of the well-known tune from Piae Cantiones known as the carol 'Personent hodie'. To this Carter has fitted entirely new words full of Easter joy, and arranged the vocal lines to be easy, effective, and stately. It is majestic and works particularly well as a processional.

The 14th-century carol, Personent hodie, is both mysterious and powerful. On This Day Earth Shall Ring---a festive processional on the ancient melody arranged by Scott Watson---explores both aspects. Beginning quietly, the modal tune emerges over a chant drone with rustic, medieval percussion. Before long, the piece takes on the joyous character alluded to in the tune's most familiar English text setting, On This Day Earth Shall Ring (written by composer, Jane Joseph, a student of Gustav Holst). As the work draws to an ebullient close, all the stops are pulled with resounding brass and ringing metallic percussion! Whether used as a striking concert opener or a jubilant final selection, On This Day Earth Shall Ring will add festive élan to your winter/holiday program! (3:28) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
